- By Ernie Rapiere
Saturday May 15, 2010 – Mid South Super NIT at Snowden Grove Park, Southaven, Mississippi.
TPSA versus Indianola Trouble – The TPSA of Cullman, Alabama came into this event with a 39-11 overall record with 2 tournament wins. They had their work cut out for them today and quickly found themselves in a heap of trouble when they took on the “NOLA”. This team came into this Super NIT with a 19-8 record, but an impressive run of 4 straight tournament wins in March and April. Earlier in this event, the NOLA had gone 1-1, losing 9-1 against the Memphis Tigers Green before rebounding with a 7-6 over a solid Mississippi Braves team.
The TPSA opened the 1st by scoring 3 runs to take a 3-0 lead. But, the NOLA answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st and then promptly shut down TPSA in the top of the 2nd as both their pitching and their defense was picture perfect. They came to bat again in the bottom of the 2nd and scored 3 more runs to grab a 6-3 lead. And, they made it look so easy that it looked like they would soon put this game out of reach.
But, TPSA found a way to get their game going as they exploded with 8 runs in the top of the 3rd to take a commanding 11-6 lead. But, the NOLA had other ideas as they answered with 3 runs before TPSA defense stiffened and stopped the NOLA rally at 11-9. TPSA added 3 more runs in the top of the 4th and then dug in with great defense lead by the spectacular overhead catch deep against the centerfield fence to stop the NOLA scoring threat. TPSA will now move on to face the Rawlings Jr. Prospects who drew a first round bye. This game is set to start Saturday night at 9:30pm
Pictured top left TPSA runner slides safely into home to close the NOLA lead to only 6-5. Shortly thereafter with 2 outs, TPSA continues their rally as batters get hits and walks to load the bases. Next up, bit Sam Baker (shown in the right photo) pops a 2xRBI double to put TPSA ahead by one run. They would not let up until the finished the game with the;
Final Score TPSA 14, NOLA 9
West Tennessee Tornados versus Memphis Travelers The Tornados looked their part, as they quickly jumped on the Travelers with a whirlwind of hits that put them up by a score of 5-0 when the Travelers came to bat in their first at bat in the bottom of the 1st inning. The Tornados defense looked equally as destructive as the quickly stopped the Travelers in 1-2-3 order. They added 4 more runs to take a 9-0 lead before the Travelers could answer with 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd.
But, the Tornados bats could not be slowed as they added 5 more runs in the third before digging in with their defense to completely shut down the Travelers and finished the game with a 14-4 win. The Tornados will now move on to face the second round of bracket play where the PSA Sox Red awaits them. This game will be played at 9:30 Saturday night.
