LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Blake Johnson went 3-for-4 and scored two runs and Grant Gillespie, Tyler Ferguson, and Blake Ehlinger rapped out two hits apiece to pace to lead the Texas Marshals to victory in the USSSA Elite World Series at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports on Thursday.
The Marshals exploded for six runs in the fifth inning to eliminate Bullet Baseball, 8-4, from the consolation bracket of the tournament.
“That is the way our team has been all year long,” said Marshals manager Kevin Higgins. “If we come out and swing the bats the way our team is capable of swinging the bats we will win a lot of baseball games. It is just a matter of getting it started and it gets contagious. One kid gets a hit and the others follow behind him and we can win some baseball games that way.”
That fateful fifth began with the Marshals trailing 4-2. Jordan Hudson opened the inning against starter Jammie Benoit by reaching on an error by shortstop Chance Stone. Ferguson then laid down a sacrifice bunt and Gillespie followed with a hit to center to put runners on the corners.
Stone then came on to relieve Benoit. Coker reached on another Bullet Baseball error, which allowed Hudson to score from third. Johnson and Collin O’Brien banged out singles and Joseph Vasquez doubled to chance Stone and give the Marshals a 6-4 lead they would not relinquish.
Garret Guidry came on and hit Jake Henley and Ehlinger to push the lead to 7-4. Lane Neely took the mound and promptly surrendered an RBI single to Kyle Higgins.
