BL Bombers 9, Louisiana Tigers 1
Thomas Lowery and Heath Quinn helped the Birmingham-based squad (6-4) hand the first defeat of the season to the Tigers (16-1), who were depleted by graduation. “Four of our key players are at junior high graduation today,” Tigers coach Leo McClure said. “And we’re not sure they’ll make it here by (elimination play) tomorrow.”
The Bombers broke to a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run single by Quinn, and broke things open with seven runs in the second, sending 13 men to the plate. Lowery, the winning lefty pitcher, delivered a two-run opposite-field double to left, and Quinn followed with a two-run opposite field single to right. Quinn doubled in the third for a three-hit day.
At one point, Lowery struck out five straight batters in the first and second innings. “I’d get the first strike, and could work the breaking ball outside,” he said. The Bombers finished third in a Super NIT tournament in Florence, Ala., last weekend. “We might get one of those bids if one of the top teams chooses to play in a tournament out west,” Bombers coach Eric Moore said. “Or maybe we can just wrap it up here this weekend.”
