Kissimmee, FL The morning started off with a match up between the NC Cleveland Indians (NC) and the SWFL Yarddawgs (FL). In the top of the inning Yarddawgs’ pitcher #24 Reyes Ramon got off to a slow start by giving up a single and walking two batters to load the bases; however, he would get out of the jam by getting a double play and a strikeout. It was the same story for the Indians’ pitcher Andrew Toney who also survived the inning without surrendering a run.
In the home half of the second inning Andrew Toney wasn't able to find the zone and walked in the first run of the affair and it didn't get much better. The next thing you know its three to zero and then a couple of seeing eye singles and a couple more walks and the deficit grew to seven and the Indians were in a deep hole. The runs were put on the board by #23 Danny Mumford, 2 runs batted in by #11 Chase Vogelbach, and one more by #10 Corbin Weeks.
After the second both pitchers were able to settle in as Yarddawgs hurler Reyes Ramon and the new Indians’ pitcher, #19 Blake Mitchell, cruised through the next two innings.
In the top of the fifth inning everything got really interesting as the Indians went to bat. Reyes Ramon walked the first batter, Blake Mitchell got a single though the left side of the infield and then #4 Wil Nance stroked a line drive to plate #8 Ben Youngblood. Two passed balls and the next thing you know its seven to three. With the runner on third, #33 Evan Phillips hit a high fly ball to left to record the sac fly and make it seven to four. The Indians got their fifth run in the inning when an error by the shortstop scores #21 Justin Carroll.
At this point it’s a new ball game and there was life in the Indians’ dugout. But in the bottom of the inning the Yarddawgs answered back with a run of their own. A single by #3 Tyler Atwell who proceeded to swipe two bases to get himself in scoring position at third. The Yarddawgs decided to suicide squeeze the runner home and it was executed to perfection by #31 Forrest Hunter. That was the insurance run the local team wanted but more importantly it took some of the wind out of the Indians’ sail.
In the final at bat pitcher Brendan Lawson came in and shut the door on the Indians to preserve the victory for the Yarddawgs and a berth to play the East Cobb Astros for a berth to the semi-finals.
