14U Omaha SlumpBuster Champs Print E-mail

Session I, June 11 through June 14, 2009

- By Ernie Rapiere

June 14, 2009 – Council Bluffs, Iowa – Thirty teams from across the USA came to challenge in Session 1 for the Triple Crown’s annual SlumpBuster that is held in concurrence with the College World Series.  This event has become one of the top tournament venues in the country.

In the 14U age bracket, the Session 1 champions were the Gulf Coast Outlaws from Magnolia, Texas.  The Outlaws finished pool play with a 2-1 record after dropping their first pool play game by a score of 9-5 to the Midwest Shockers from Chicago, IL.  From there, the Outlaws shifted into high gear and roared on with two straight impressive wins.  First, they beat the Utah Bandits 7-1.  Then, they finished pool play with an impressive 13-3 win over the Indiana Irish.  Overall, the Outlaws outscored their pool play opponents 25-13, thus earning them the #8 seed going into bracket play.

In the bracket rounds, the Outlaws never let up.  They opened round 2 with a 4-3 squeaker over the #15 seed KC Prospects of Kansas City, MO.  This close win was impressive as the Prospects had just come off of a 5-3 upset win over the #1 seed, Iowa Yellow Jackets from Des Moines.  After this win, the Outlaws moved on to the semi-finals where they outlasted the CC Elite from Auroa, CO by a score of 7-4.

In the finals, the Outlaws continued to ramp up their momentum as they proved too deep in pitching for the KC Barnstormers to match.  When the last out was made, the Outlaws held a 7-2 victory and the championship trophy in their hands.

Miles Manning was the workhorse pitcher for the Outlaws in the championship win as he pitched 5 innings.  Nick Pederson also pitched 1 inning in the championship game.

By winning this event, the Gulf Coast Outlaws won a berth to play in the Triple Crown World Series coming up in July in Colorado Springs.

Next up at the 2009 annual SlumBuster, is session 2.  TravelBallSelect.com will be covering the highlights of this event.
