The recent success for the West Covina Bombers at this year’s 14U USSSA California Fall State Championships was just the start that this team was looking for. After placing 4th in a tournament prior to the start of the Fall Championships, the Bombers bounced back with excellent defense and some pretty impressive offense as they put together a total team effort to bring home the championship. The Bombers are a tight knit group who got knocked down but really came together and turned it around in the matter of a week. The Bombers manager Martin Mendez offered some advice when he told his team that last week was over and that realistically they hadn't played competitive baseball since the Super Series World Series in Memphis last July. The Bombers didn’t have their ideal finish last season after coming up a little short in Memphis, but they’ve had their fair share of recent success after claiming the 2007 USSSA Western World Series and Triple Crown National Championships in back to back weeks. With the way the Bombers played at this year’s California Fall State Championships, big things could be in the making in West Covina. In 2009, the Bombers will rely heavily on their four high school players in Jonathan Mendez, Kevin McKelvey, Alex, and Derek Garcia. Garcia has already made a big impact with a big time grand slam at last week’s Fall State Championship. The remainder of the team will be made up of 8th graders Uriel Carranza, Adrian De Horta, David Denson, Austin Fox, Joey Franco, Nick Granado, Zachary Stoops, and Adrian Velasques. So far, the Bombers are off to a great start in 2009 where they’ve also finished CABA West Fall Ball with a 10 – 0 record in the 15U division. On top of that, they’ve already qualified for the CABA West World Series and the USSSA Western World Series and look to add a few more before it’s all said and done. Travel Ball Select wishes the West Covina Bombers continued success in 2009 as we continue to keep a close eye on this team as the new rankings draw near.
