12U Cooperstown NATC Pool Play Wrap-up PDF Print E-mail

August 26, 2009 Cooperstown Dreams Park – NATC week of pool play has now been completed.  This week attracts teams who had won previous week’s championships during the season and other talented packed teams who come to compete for what has become known as the toughest week of competitive play.  After 6 rounds of play, a total of 15 teams remain unbeaten.

Here is how the top 5 teams earned their seed.

#1 Seed - The Tri State Arsenal (NJ) finished pool play with a 6-0 record as they outscored their opponents by reported margin of 130-3.  The Arsenal opened pool play on Sunday with an 18-0 shutout over the #93 seed Boston Parkway Mullen in a game where the Arsenal got a 3xRBI homerun from Justin Hageman along with a solo homeruns by Nick Ciocco and Manny Strickland.  In game two on Sunday, the Arsenal beat the #31 seed Santa Ynez Warriors (CA) warriors by a score of 14-1.  In this game, the Arsenal’s Ciocco and Shinn each slammed two homeruns. In game 3 on Monday, the Arsenal beat the #97 Saratoga Thoroughbreds (NY) 14-2.  The Tri State Arsenal got a 2xRBI homer from Zack Gakeler along with a grand slam by Brandon Janofsky. Justin Hagenman also added a homerun.  In their second game on Monday, the Arsenal shut out #101 Wilbraham Athletics 13-0 taking advantage of a no hitter performance from Sean Breen who also added a homerun. In addition, Kyle Bordner hit a homerun to cap off their 13-0 scoring performance.

In their first game on Tuesday, the Arsenal pulverized the #103 seed Fairmount Braves (PA) before moving on to finish pool play with an 18-0 shutout win over #65 Jackson Thunder (NJ).

#2 Seed - Team Anderson (CA) earned the #2 seed as they finished play with a 6-0 record, having outscored their opponents by a 73-5 margin.  Team Anderson opened pool play on Sunday with a 13-0 win over #83 East Haven Predators (CT).  In this game, Anderson’s Dalley Dey, Mark Abbate, Johnathon Valenzula and Angelo Angrlo each hit a homerun.  In their second game on opening day, Team Anderson Shut out #29 LaGrange Hurricanes (NY) by a score of 10-0 as Tyler Urbach, Tristian Beck, and Jonathon Valenzuela each hit a homeruns.

On Monday, Team Anderson beat the #48 seed Cape Cod Clippers (MA) by a margin of 9-1.  The Clippers got their only score when Mike Couhig hit a homerun. Team Anderson responded when Tyler Urbach hit 2 homers and Garrett Calvert also added a solo homerun.  Anderson then moved on to hammer out a decisive 18-1 win over the #73 seed Port Washington Legends Blue.  In this game, Team Anderson got barrage of homeruns from Jonathan Valezula, Joey Sanchez, Mark Abbate, Garrett Calvert, Jon Hernandez, Dallas Dey, and Nate Glasser.

On Tuesday, Team Anderson opened with an 18-1 win over #60 Kimberton Aces (PA), and finished off pool play with a decisive 15-1 win over #82 Toms River Bengals (NJ).

The #3 So Cal Thunder (CA) wrapped up pool play with a 6-0 record while they outscored their opponents by a 107-8margin.  Their six wins included opening day wins of 15-2 win over #92 seed Island Wolves (NY) along with a 12-0 shutout of #60 seed Saugus Sachems (MA).  In this game, Bryce pitched a perfect game while Watter hit a 3xRBI homerun.

On Monday, the Thunder beat #58 seed Western Mass Cougars (MA) by a score of 16-1 as Chris Colarossi and Ted Smith each hit a 2xRBI homers.  Cougars got a solo homerun from Mele to account for their only score.  In game two on Monday, the Thunder slammed the #70 seed Spring Lake/Sea Girt Sting Rays by a score of 24-1.

On Tuesday, the Thunder opened with a 13-1 win over the #57 seed New Hampshire Diamond Devils and finished off pool play with a dominating 27-3 win over the #56 seed Richmond Hit Dogs.  In this game, the Thunder got a grand slams from Bryce Fehmel grandslam and Ryan Fineman along with homeruns from Matt Miller and Chase Sisco.  The Hit Dogs score when Brian Davia hit a homerun.

The #4 Seed California Lumberjacks (CA) also finished pool play with an unbeaten record.  They opened with an impressive 14-4 win over #27 Seattle Select.  In this game, the Lumberjacks Guzman and Barajas each hit a 2 run homerun.  Also, Vasquez added a homerun, while Natividad blasted a 3 run homerun.  In their second game on Sunday, the Lumberjacks beat a determined #52 seed Nova Nats (VA) by a score of 9-2.

On Monday, the Lumberjacks shutout #89 seed South Metro All Stars (MN) by a score of 12-0.  In this game, the Lumberjacks got a 3xRBI homerun by Bobby Vasquez, along with solo homeruns from Bryan Brzycki and Charles Macias. In game two on Monday, the Lumberjacks beat the #90 seed Keith Osik's MLI Phantoms (NY)by a score of 16-2.

On Tuesday, the Lumberjacks sailed past the #49 seed White Plains Wildcats (NY) by a score of 17-1.  In this game, the Lumberjacks’ Alan Trejo hit a 2 run homer; Adolho Barajas hit a 3 run homer; Josh Penner, Masciel & Julian Romo each added a homerun.  TheWildcats scored on a homer from John Longo.  The Lumberjacks closed out their pool play on Tuesday with a 13-0 shutout win over the #72 seed Wayland Warriors (MA).

#5 Seed - United States Baseball Stars (MI) also finished pool play with an unbeaten record while outscoring their opponents by a 88-9 margin.  The Stars opened pool play on Sunday with a 14-1 win over #76 Teaneck Southern (NJ) and moved on to slam the #85 seed GBI Express (NC) by a 24-4 margin.  In this game, the Stars Hiles hit 2 homeruns, Milligan and Stein each hit a homerun, whle Edwards capped the day off with a Grand.  Ward pitched 2 innings with 5 strikeouts.

On Monday, the Stars beat #54 Roger Allen Rockets (NH) by a score of 13-2 in a game where Steins & Murphy each hit a homerun. Ward pitched 5 innings with 10 strikeouts.  In their second game of the day, the Stars beat #58 Western Mass Cougars (MA) by 13-2.  In this game, the Stars’ Tyler Wood went 4-4 with a homerun.  Also, Cody Chandler and Mike Wagner hit homeruns.  The Western Mass Cougars scored when Drew Mele hit a homerun.

On Tuesday, the Stars dominated #91 seed Auburn Legends (NY) by a score of 19-1 lead by Mike Wagner’s 3 homeruns.  Also, Tyler Ward, Brandon jonas, Ron Murphy, and Garrett Steins each hit a homerun.  In their final game of pool play, the Stars beat a solid #37 Jersey Bandits by a 15-1 margin.

The table below lists each of the teams that finished with a top 16 seed.  This accomplishment offers a significant advantage as these teams earn a bye through the 3rd round of bracket play that starts on Wednesday.
