August 20, 2009 Cooperstown Dreams Park – Week 11 “Sweet 16” play has now been completed as only 5 of 104 teams still remain unbeaten.  The “Elite 8” match-ups are set and ready to get underway.  Following is a summary of the results of today’s key games leading to the “Elite 8”.

The #1 seed Tustin Mets (CA) beat #16 Los Angeles Rattlers (CA) by 14-7.  The Rattlers got a 3xRBI homerun from Steinberg while Grayson went 2-for-4 with 2xRBIs but this wasn’t enough to stop the Mets who got homeruns from Doherty, Christopherson, and Peabody to advance to the “Elite 8” where they will face the Jersey Shore Stallions (NJ).

#2 seed – The Las Vegas Warriors survived a strong challenge from the #15 seed California Golden Spikes.  The Spikes got their offense in gear with a homerun from Manny Avila’s homerun. Nick Galvan went 2-for-3 w/ 2 RBI.  The Warriors Nolan Kingham went 3-for-3 with a homerun, while Tyler Gixby went 2-for-3 with a homerun to push the Warriors past the Spikers by a score of 10-9.  The Warriors will face #7 Rise Baseball (VA) later today.
#3 seed – The Shrub Oak Storm (NY) fell 11-9 to the #19 Connecticut Cardinals.  The Cardinals Willie Burger went 4-for-4 with a homerun; Toth, Johnson, Vazzano, Rich & Walkinshew each hit a homerun. The Storm got homeruns from Arena, Dupich, Fara, and Harta.  The Cardinals will advance to the “Elite 8” where they will face the #6 seed Moorpark Mud Dogs (CA).


#4 seed – The Santa Barbara Tides (CA) were upset by the #20 seed San Diego Stallions (CA) by a score of 18-7.  Stallions got started with a 3xRBI homerun from Hight while Gage Canning went 4-for-4 with 2 homeruns to lead this upset win. Pavio Cruz pitched 5 innings and also went 3-for-5 to lead his team to victory. The Tides’ Williams went 3-for-3 with a solo and a 2run homer.  Also, Gilligan hit a 2 run homerun but this wasn’t enough to get the Tides past the Stallions.


#5 seed – Wisconsin Red Dogs (WI) fell 3-2 to the #12 seed Pottsville Pythons (PA).  McDonald pitched a complete game for the Pytons, while Bonk hit a 3 run homerun to seal the upset win.  The Pythons advance to face #20 San Diego Stallions (CA) later today.

#6 seed – Moorpark Mud Dogs (CA) edged past a determined #22 seed Bad Company Baseball (CA) by a score of 8-7. Chase Tennant hit 2 homeruns to put Moorpark past the upset minded Bad Company.  Moorpark will face the #19 seed Connecticut Cardinals (CT) later today in “Elite 8” play.

#7 seed – RISE Baseball (VA) advanced to Thursday’s “Elite 8” play with a 7-0 shutout win over the North Wall Knights (NJ).  Next up, RISE will face the #2 seed Las Vegas Warriors (NV).

#8 seed – Jersey Shore Stallions (NJ) beat the Virginia Bruins (VA) 15-7 to earn their slot in the “Elite 8”.  In this game, the Bruins got homeruns form Bridis & Gressy.  Stallions’ Michael Caggiano countered with 2 homeruns, while Julius Saporito & Steve Forlano each hit a homerun.  The Stallions will face the #1 seed Tustin Mets Baseball Club (CA) in “Elite 8” play.
