The 2009 12U edition of the Macomb Mudhens are looking to build on 3 years of success
Macomb, Michigan - The 2009 12U Macomb Mudhens are poised to once again be one of the top 12U teams in the nation – and make no mistake about it; they have the talent to compete for the top rankings during the upcoming 2009 season.
The Mudhens is a quality organization that was started in 2005 by Tony Leonard and a group of coaches who loved the game. At that time, they had no idea that their efforts would expand into an organization that continues to build on its successes, year after year.
In its first year, the 9U Mudhens proved they were a competitive them when they made it to the quarter finals at the St. Louis World series. That success ignited the enthusiasm of their parents and players. They all returned as 10U’s, and each year this team has achieved new goals that has advanced their level of play.
Today, the Mudhens organization fields teams in both 11U and 12U age groups that are competing at the highest levels nationally. Last year, both of their teams (10U and 11U), earned berths to the USSSA Elite 24 championship series at Disney. This article features this year’s 12U Mudhens, a team that made it all the way to the semi-finals of the 2008 11U Elite 24 before finally losing a squeaker to the West Chester Sluggers by a score of 3-2 that wasn’t decided until the last batter. Their play earned them 3rd place finish at the Elite 24, even though their top pitcher was hurt and unable to throw a single pitch in Disney.
So, lookout for these 2009 Mudhens - they are poised to be better than ever as they are deep in pitchers and have 11 players who are power hitters. Thus, from top to bottom of their batting order, the Mudhens will be a threat to go yard on any given pitch. The 12U Mudhens have added 3 players to their team for 2009;
Kyle Randick (an outstanding player who pitched a 2 hitter as a guest player in Disney. Alex Malzone, who hit 500 in Disney as a guest player.
Alex Roeds, an outstanding athlete who has played up in age since the age of 9. Last year, Alex played on one of the top 12U teams here Michigan.
All 3 of these players are very good and are going to make the Mudhens a very tough opponent to beat.
In addition to these outstanding new players, the Mudhens return 4 players who were named by TravelBallSelect to its 2008 11U All America team along with 3 more who are outstanding players and have the potential to be All America caliber. 2009 Preparation Plans
The Mudhens will start indoor practices December. Their 2009 preparation will start with a clinic that will be hosted by Matt Nokes – former major league, all star catcher with Detroit Tigers, who also played with the New York Yankees along with Cory Conrad – former collegiate standout player who also played professional baseball. 2009 Tournament Plans
The Mudhens will play an aggressive schedule that includes the many of the top national tournaments coming up in 2009. These events include: Battle In The South or Tennessee Super NITCincy Flame Classic( 52 teams playing in this)The Michigan MajorSuper NIT in Michigan
Battle Of The Borders - a 4 team tourney hosted by the Mudhens. This event includes the Westchester Sluggers of Ohio, the Runner-up at Disney Elite 24 in 2008, Ohio Diamondhawks-TBS Honorable Mention, and 1 more team TBA)
In addition, the 2009 12U Mudhens will be playing in 3 different 13U tournaments as well.
The 2009 Goals for the Mudhens are:
1. Return to Disney and Play the Best of the Best in 12U
2. Play at Cooperstown during the NATC weekend
