10U- Super Series 16 World Series (TX)- Texas Boom vs. South Texas Riders Print E-mail

Texas Boom holds on for win against South Texas Riders

By Devin Hasson

McKinney, Texas. It was not easy, but the Texas Boom was able to hold off the South Texas Riders for a 3-2 victory to advance in the winner’s bracket in the 10U division at the Super Series Super 16 World Series at The Ballfields at Craig Ranch in McKinney.

The Boom, the second seed in the tournament, were unable to score during the final three innings, as the Riders hung around and closed to within 3-2 with a run in the top of the fifth.
South Texas appeared to have a rally brewing in their final at-bat when the leadoff runner reached base with a walk, but shortstop Bo Dallas snagged a ground ball and threw to first for the double play. That proved to be big, as the next two Riders also reached before reliever Nathan Artt was able to get the last out on a ground ball to Fulton Cuze at third.

John Guzman got the start for the Boom and allowed just two runs in four-and-two-thirds innings to get the win. Things started well for the Carrollton-based team, as Guzman needed just six pitches to retire the side in the first inning. The Boom offense went to work in the bottom of the frame, as Will Guzman singled and Fulton Cuze was issued an intentional walk with two outs. Davis Green made the Riders pay for walking his teammate when he smacked a two-run double off the fence in left field to grab an early 2-0 lead.
South Texas scratched across a run in the top of the second but the Boom restored its two-run cushion in the bottom of the third. John Guzman walked and moved to second on a throwing error. He then scored on a RBI single by Micah Dallas that made it 3-1.

The Boom offense would be quiet from there, as they managed just two hits during the next two innings. The Riders scored to make it 3-2 in the top of the fifth before Artt came on in relief to strand runners at second and third. They would make one more charge in the sixth but the Boom was able to hold on to advance.
