Dallas Tigers, McKinney Marshals to square off for 10U national crown

By Devin Hasson

If the travelballselect.com national rankings were any indication, the two teams expected to play for the Super Series Super 16 World Series lived up to the billing. The top-seeded Dallas Tigers, an honorable mention selection in the latest TBS 10U national poll, rolled through the field by advancing to the title game. The Marshals, ranked 14th in the TBS poll, fought back from an earlier loss to the Tigers to give themselves a chance at a national championship, although they will have to defeat Dallas twice to do so.

It was a hectic week for all the teams, as rains shortened pool play and forced changes in the bracket formation. The Tigers, a team based out of Carrollton who swept their two pool play games, continued that trend once bracket play began. They started by dusting the Corpus Christi Rivercats with a 7-1 win and then handed the rival Marshals a 9-1 setback. To advance to the title game, Dallas defeated the Texas Boom, 5-2.

The Boom had made an impressive journey in its own right. After earning the second seed, they run-ruled the Wichita Sluggers in a 15-5 rout and then held off the South Texas Riders, 3-2, in a close game.

The consolation bracket featured the third-seeded Irving Canes, who were upset in the first round by the South Texas Riders. The Canes bounced back against the Wichita Sluggers with a 4-1 win to stay alive in the first round of the elimination bracket. The eighth-seeded Corpus Christ Rivercats also staved off elimination with a 6-1 win over the Palmview Angels.
From there, the story was the Marshals, a Plano-based team. They shook off the loss to the Tigers on Thursday to win two games later in the evening. They started with a 9-5 victory over the Canes and followed that up with a 12-0 rout of the Riders.

After playing three games on Thursday, the Marshals returned to the field on Friday morning and did not miss a beat in posting a 12-2 victory over the Texas Boom to earn a shot at the title.
