Lamorinda uses 15-run third to route TABU in 10U Championship
By: Joey Akeley
Twin Creeks, CA. Going into the bottom of the third inning, it seemed that the rival Lamorinda Diablos and Team Tabu were set for another nail-biter. As it turned out, the game never saw a fourth inning due to a Lamorinda
offensive explosion. The Diablos pounded out 15 runs on the third, stunning Tabu 18-3 in the championship of the 10U section.
In the bottom of the third, the Diablos first three runners reached, and Brandon Mcllwain’s RBI single put them up one. Matt Thompkins
followed with a sac fly to put Lamorinda up two, and it would take 14 batters until Tabu recorded another out. Eno Evans RBI double put the Diablos up three and Blake Diggle followed with a walk, ending a difficult outing for Tabu starting pitcher Sonny
Brandwood.
“I think they just got some bad momentum going,” head coach Rick Rider said. “Their first pitcher Sonny Brandwood is an outstanding pitcher,
he is one of the best pitchers in Northern California. He tired a little bit in the third inning, and had he gone longer this could have
been a much different game.”
Robert Chiono relieved Brandwood and did not record an out. The first batter he faced was Shane Garrett, and Garrett unloaded on a high off speed pitch for a tworun triple. Garrett’s hit traveled approximately 250 feet in the air, which would have been a home run in just about any other 10U ballpark.
“Anything (we) threw, they were hitting,” Tabu manager C.J. Perez said.“Their bats were hot and we could not do anything about it.”
Michael Hooper followed with an RBI triple, and Ryan JenkinsWilburn followed that with an RBI single. The onslaught continued with a two run double by Meuricius Vazquez, a tworun single by Evans and another RBI for Thompkins, who also earned the win with three solid innings pitched.
JenkinsWilburn ended the game with his second RBI single of the inning, giving the Diablos the win due to the 15-run lead in the third inning rule.
