Greensboro, NC. The Charlotte Hurricanes and the MSA Black faced off in the first round of the Greensboro Super NIT in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Hurricanes flexed their baseball muscles and walked away with an 8-0 win. The Hurricanes jumped out to an early lead scoring three runs in the first inning. The left-hander took an inside fastball and hit a triple into the right centerfield gap to plate all three runners to push the lead to 7-0. MSA Black continued to battle in their first game of the young 2009 baseball season. With runners two runners on in both the 2nd and 3rd innings the Hurricanes pitched their way out of trouble. In the third inning Callen Niccio stepped up to the plate with a runner on 3rd base and hit a sac fly to score Alex Leshock to close out the scoring 8-0. Mitchell Manduzzi pitched a scoreless 4th inning for the MSA Black. Jimmy Pritt came on in relief and pitched a scoreless 4th inning for the Hurricanes to shut the door on the MSA Black. “Callen’s triple really put the game away for us, it was a great timely hit” said Hurricanes Coach Gary Smetak. “Finishing the game early by the run rule was important as well, it will allow us to save some of our pitching. It is a long tournament,” Coach Smetak stated.
