10U- Elite 32 World Series (FL)- #10 Oklahoma Rays vs. #4 San Diego Stars Print E-mail

After an impressive onslaught of Rays hitting, a rare twist of fate saw the San Diego Stars advance past the Oklahoma Rays into the 10U Elite 32 World Series Championship Game on Sunday, July 17th.

The Rays started hot in top of the first, getting three consecutive hits and taking a 1-0 lead on a Kaden Polcovich double. But the Stars had a championship in their sights and turned a solid 6-4-3 double play to minimize the damage, leaving the top of the first down 2-0.

After retiring the Stars 1-2-3 in the first, the Rays bats picked up where they left off. Back-to-back doubles by Polcovich and Manek took the Rays lead to 6-0. Stars relief pitcher Brock Mosier came in to close out the inning, throwing one pitch to get Roman Phansalkar to pop out.

The Rays threatened to score again in the fourth, but a heads up play by shortstop Nick Allen throwing to catcher Brendon Beck kept the Stars in the game. The Stars bats came around in the fourth, when Tyler Jablonski led off with a double and later scored on a Nick Allen sacrifice fly to make it 6-1 Rays.

But controversy immediately ensued after the out, when the Stars disputed whether Rays starting pitcher Eli Davis had exceeded his maximum allowed innings for the tournament. With Allen's sacrifice out, Davis had exceeded his maximum innings by 1/3 of an inning forcing the Rays to forfeit and giving the Stars the win by default.

The Stars hope to use the improbable change of fate and newfound momentum when they play the Houston Banditos in the 10U Elite 32 World Series Championship Game.
