10U Cooperstown Wk 3 Champs - Georgia Bandits Print E-mail
- By Ernie Rapiere

June 26, 2009 Cooperstown, 10U week 3 Championships: The 2009 week 3 Championship featured two teams from the state of Georgia; the 6-4-3 Academy Cougars from Marietta (seeded #4), and the (#14 seed) Bandits Baseball from Ringgold.  And on this day, the Bandits won the Cooperstown championship by a score of 10-0.

This win marks the 2nd time the Bandits have beaten the 6-4-3 Academy this year.  These two teams had already faced each other on one ocasion during an early season tournament.  On that early season matchup,  the Bandits took home a 6-0 win on that day.  Since then, the Bandits had only lost 1 game when they fell 10-5 to the top ranked Mizuno’s Glory (FL) in the championship game of the Atlanta Super NIT.  The Bandits came into this event ranked #3 nationally by TravelBallSelect.  But this week, the Bandits proved that they have continued to improve as they made a strong claim that they may be the best team in the nation.  Still, let’s not forget that many good things can be said about the 6-4-3 Academy Cougars as they truly distinguished themselves with outstanding play throughout week 3.

But on this day in Cooperstown, the Bandits controlled this game from the very first pitch as Cole Shelton led off the top of the 1st with a double off the center field fence.  Shelton later scored when Sean Coakley squeeze bunted back to the pitcher and was out at first. Giving the Bandits a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

The Bandits broke the game open in the top of the 2nd when Will Hardigree singled to left followed by an RBI single from Noah Peterson.  Cole Shelton retuned to bat again in the top of the 2nd and once again hit an infield single that drove in Peterson.  From there, the Bandits loaded the bases and a few mishandles lead to an avalanche of runs.  When the inning was over, the Bandits held a commanding 6-0 lead.

From that point, it was a question of solid pitching performances by Bandits Pitcher, Will Hardigree, who stuck out 5 Cougar batters while allowing only two hits.  Hardigree’s outstanding performance was backed by outstanding infield and outfield play that scooped up “would be” hits and grabbed outfield fly balls with a model of proficiency.

The Bandits added 4 more runs in the top of the 5th when Tyler Calvert loaded the bases on an infield hit.  Next, Will Hardigree singled to drive in Cole Shelton.  And from there, Ethan Clark walked to bring Sean Coakley home from third. Gavin Roberson walked to bring in Tyler Calvert .  Kobie Cowan walked to bring Will Hardigree home.
