Monday, April 20th – Florida State Championships – Final Results
- By Ernie Rapiere Bracket play opened with some matchups that proved to be real shootouts - baseball at its best. Namely, TEAM COMBAT and the ORLANDO WARRIORS played in game that went like an old western shootout duel - going two extra innings with the COMBAT winning 13-12. In this game, Joe Skinner came in for the COMBAT to pitch the two extra innings. Skinner held the Warriors to one run allowing his team to surge for victory – an impressive performance considering that in extra innings, the runners are given a head start advance to second base. After this grueling game, TEAM COMBAT advanced to play SUDDEN IMPACT in the semi-finals. This game went the full six innings to stretch the endurance of the COMBAT players. In the end, the IMPACT won 3-1. COMBAT pitcher, Joe Skinner, also pitched 4 innings in this game, shutting down the IMPACT with no runs while allowing only 1 hit before he reached his maximum of 6 innings for the day. In the end, the SUDDEN IMPACT held TEAM COMBAT to one run. Game observers say that the outstanding play by the IMPACT center fielder was a key reason why the IMPACT was able to pull away in innings 4 and 5.This SUDDEN IMPACT team was clearly a good team as they had some impressive wins in this event. In addition to their win over a very good COMBAT team, another key win came from their impressive 14-5 smashing of the RAWLINGS USA PATRIOTS of Tampa, a team that came into this tournament ranked #4 nationally by TravelBallSelect. After their impressive wins over RAWLINGS and TEAM COMBAT, the IMPACT advanced to play the MIZUNOS GLORY for the Championship. But the grueling game against the COMBAT clearly took a lot out of the IMPACT, as in the finals, they were not able find enough left in their tanks to match up against the strong pitching and the offensive power of MIZUNOS GLORY. In the end, they fell by a score of 11-0 to an outstanding MIZUNOS team. Congratulations MIZUNOS GLORY. Clearly this win proved that MIZUNOS GLORY is a force to recon with in 2009.
