2008 14U NJ Mariners Print E-mail

                                            14U New Jersey Mariners

nj_mariners_2.jpgThe New Jersey Mariners Baseball Club was established in 2002 and now has 10 teams from ages 9-15. They have taken baseball and winter training to a new level in NJ. Players must first realize that academics come first. All report cards are checked every marking period and if you do not have a C or above average you can't play or practice. After meeting this criteria, the players then go through a 12 week winter training program that is second to none. The boys get 12 weeks of speed training, conditioning, pitching, hitting, infield, and team defense.  The Mariners organization uses all former pro and college players and coaches to train their players. The 14U Blue team has had great success leading up to 2008 and are off to a hot start again this year. As 13 year olds in 2007, the Mariners were 65-7 with 5 of their losses coming against older teams as they played up to find better competition.

In 2008, they are currently 38-0 with 4 tournament titles already (Sports at the Beach Shamrock Shootout, Old Bridge Pre- Season Blast, 15U Triple Crown Staten Island Slugfest, and the Richmond County 14U Elite Woodbat tournament). They will be traveling to Baseball Heaven in Long Island NY, Triple Crown in NY, East Cobb, Georgia for the 14U Perfect Game WWBA National Championship, and Sports at the Beach in Delaware again. The Mariners will also try to earn a bid to the AABC World Series in Arizona by playing in a qualifier in NY in July. The team has many stars from all over the state of NJ who travel up to and hour and a half just to play for this team. The Mariners have 11 pitchers which make them tough in tournaments with 3 standing out as they are all considered aces of the staff, Jack Morgan ,Chris Liquori, and Brendan Mayers. Coach Attilio has all the confidence in the world to hand any one of them the ball in the final game. All good teams are strong up the middle and that is also one of the Mariners’  strengths. DJ Link controls the pitching staff from behind the dish and is a wall behind the plate.  Link is also said to possess a cannon that helps control the running game. Matt Tietz at SS is as good as they come with the glove. Cody McCallum controls the outfield in center and is also the teams table setter on offense. The power hitters on the ball club are Zach Gray, Nick Ebert, Kidane Rutty, and Joe Ogren. Trying to get through this lineup this year has not been an easy task as they all hit for power and average. One major factor in the Mariner’s success is that they have guys that can play multiple roles and multiple positions. Mike Sheppard, Jordan Attilio, Mike Cannata, and Eric Goitia all do this by pitching, playing infield, outfield or wherever coach Attilio asks them to play. The Mariners are a well-rounded team that show class on and off the field and they have a reputation for playing the game the right way. They are a fun team to watch and should make some noise at East Cobb in June. For more about the Mariners you can go to there website at njmariners.com
