14U East Cobb Astros
The 2008 14U East Cobb Astro's hope to follow in the footsteps of last years team. They have eight players from the 2007 13U Astro’s who finished third in the USSSA Elite 24 in Orlando.
The eight returning players include the top six pitchers from last years 13U team, RHP’s Jack Berry, David Sosebee, Matty Spruill and Joseph Wiseman along with LHP’s Jacob Bruce and Jared Walsh. Also returning are offensive MVP Cole Miller, and two of the top catchers in the Southeast, Trey Benefield and Jack Berry.
The Astro’s have also added three of the top 14U pitchers in the country. All three have been clocked in the low 80’s. LHP Kyle Carter, the star player for the 2007 Columbus, GA Little League World Series Championship team, RHP 6’ 5” Tucker Simpson(2007 13u Team Alabama) and RHP Tyler Moore (2007 14u Baton Rouge Astro’s). Pitching should be at least 6 deep and combined with a great combination of speed and power on offence should make the Astro’s a major force in 2008 once again.
The infield defense should be impressive with middle infielders, Matt Gonzales (2007 14U Glendale Gauchos), Jess Posey (2007 13U Young Guns), Tyler Moore (2007 14U Baton Rouge Astro’s), and corner infielders Tucker Simpson, Cole Miller, Chase Scott (2007 13u Home Plate Chili Dogs), Alex Gonzalez (2007 13u EC Hurricanes), and Joseph Wiseman.
The Astro’s definitely have National Championship potential. The past 2 seasons have generated back to back USSSA Elite 24 titles including 5 National Championships at 14U level for head coach Dave Roberts. Dave has let TBS know that he is determined to three-peat in 2008.
The Astro’s and the Alabama Storm should battle for the number one spot in the Southeast region. The Storm has added a few more players to a squad that was already loaded with talent. We expect to see many battles between these teams throughout the spring and summer.
