Friday, July 4, 2008 (Southaven, Miss.) -- Dark clouds rumbled through, the humidity reached uncomfortable levels and a warm breeze wafted across the baseball fields at Snowden Grove Park, but the teams that survived the first five days of the NABF World Classics were focused on just one thing – winning championship gold.
Three days of Round Robin pool play, followed by 46 games on Thursday, prepared the survivors for Friday’s semi-finals and finals. Winners were crowned in four age divisions – 13-year-olds, 11-year-olds, 10-year-olds and nine-year-olds.
The Memphis (Tenn.) Travelers, ranked No. 14 in the 13U travelballselect.com poll, surprised few serious observers as they defeated the South Mississippi Stampede, 8-0, in the semis and the Gameday Athletics of Huntsville, Ala., 7-2, in the finals.
In the championship game, Chase Hamilton went the distance on the mound for the Travelers and added two runs in four at-bats. Matt Bolton also contributed two runs, with Reed Matheny, John Wesley Ray and Ryan Garner each adding one score apiece.
Memphis scored two runs in each of the first two innings and added two more in the fifth. The final run came in the sixth.
The Gameday Athletics, who advanced to the finals by defeating the Oklahoma Titans, 9-1, in the semi-finals, countered with the pitching of Austin Sexton. Gameday’s two runs came in the first inning by Keegan Thompson and in the second inning by lead-off hitter Tyler Brazelton.
Based on coaches’ recommendations, the following players were named to the All-Tournament Team: Sexton, Thompson, Christopher Brown and Justin Gilliam, all from Gameday Athletics; Matheny, Hamilton, Ray and Josh Cooley, all from the Memphis Travelers; Daniel Arthur, Zach Jackson, Coleman Key and Bobby Schrimsher, all from the Oklahoma Titans; and Darien Brown, Jalen Haskin, Jamol Posey and Deon Ulmer, all from the South Mississippi Stampede.
Coaches nominated players from their own squads. Only teams that qualified for the semi-finals were eligible to place players on the All-Tournament list.
