Tournament Results: 13U USSSA Georgia State Major The 2008 Major State Championship for Georgia was held June 16 – 22. Unlike previous years, Mother Nature cooperated and other than a short delay on Sunday morning to prepare the fields from an overnight rain, great weather greeted all the competitors at the always well prepped East Cobb Baseball complex. 14 teams were entered this year, featuring 3 TBS top-ten teams in the East Cobb Astros, Georgia Bandits, and Atlanta Monarchs. The Monarchs were looking for a three-peat and the Astros and Bandits were looking to lay claim to the best team in Georgia prior to all three teams heading to the Elite World Series in Disney. Pool Play went as expected for the most part, the Bandits took care of their business on Monday night, beating the East Cobb Longhorns 15-0 and Wills Park Force 12-2. The Elite Red Sox also flexed some muscles Monday night, beating the Sandy Plains Trojans 13-5 and the East Cobb Cubs 12-5. Monday also saw the East Cobb Astros struggle with the surprising Sandy Plains Wildcats before prevailing 8-7. Tuesday saw the Monarchs in action for the first time, winning a close one over the East Cobb Braves 9-6 before beating the Sandy Springs Longhorns 14-2. The Astros also won a close one over the scrappy South Forsyth War Eagles, 3-2. Wednesday brought the start of the double elimination bracket play with the Bandits claiming the #1 seed and the Monarchs #2. Both teams received a bye into the second round. The Dekalb Tigers were seeded 3rd and the Astros 4th. The Astros, Red Sox, War Eagles and Braves advanced, while the Tigers fell to the loser’s bracket, losing to the East Cobb Longhorns 10-9. Thursday saw the Monarchs win easily vs. the Wills Park Force, 14-2. Meanwhile the Bandits had what would prove to be their toughest test of the week, as the South Forsyth War Eagles threw their ace and were locked into a pitcher’s duel. The Eagles scraped out a 2-1 lead in the 5th, but the Bandits scored in the home half of both the 6th and 7th to take a 3-2 victory. The Astros also prevailed 5-1 in a win over the Red Sox. That left the Bandits, Monarchs, Astros and East Cobb Braves as the survivors in the Winners bracket. Friday’s game would determine who would advance to the weekend from the loser’s bracket, and the Red Sox and Force survived. Saturday’s games would pit the Monarchs against the Braves and Bandits vs. the Astros in the Winners bracket. The Monarchs easily handled the Braves 8-0, while the entire park anticipated a major showdown between arguably two of the top teams in the country. David Mayo took the hill for the Bandits with Bruce Kirkpatrick getting the ball for the Astros. The Bandits struck early for a 4-0 lead and Mayo, behind two timely double plays by the Bandits middle infield, held the Astros in check, giving up a run in the 5th. The Astros scored twice in the 6th behind a HR from Jamari Moore and a fielder’s choice and appeared back in the game. However the Bandits erupted for 8 runs in the home half of the 6th behind 6 hits and HR’s from Justin Friend and a walk-off three-run shot from Taylor Allum to reach the run rule. The Astros would have to battle through the loser’s bracket, where they eventually lost to the Red Sox, 9-1. The Red Sox had eliminated the Braves earlier in the day, 8-6. Sunday morning brought a 30 minute delay to prep the fields after an overnight shower, but it was the Bandits’ bats that kept their thunder. They banged out 9 hits in 5 innings, including HRs from Hunter Anglin and Cameron Varga. Anglin pitched a masterful game, holding the Monarchs to two singles. Varga’s shot was a 3-run walk-off in the home half of the 5th which put the run rule into effect. The Monarchs proceeded to defeat the always tough Red Sox 10-7, but then had the task of beating the Bandits twice while the Bandits only needed one. The Monarchs seemed up to the task early by taking a quick 5-0 lead in the top of the 1st as the Bandits had to remove their started after only 2/3 of an inning. The Bandits, however, would not be denied. They scored 1 in the home half behind a lead-off HR from Josh Hart, Taylor Allum came on in relief to shut down the Monarchs and go the rest of the way, and the Bandits went on to score 7 in the 2nd, 3 in the 3rd, and 4 in the 4th to take a 15-5 lead. The Monarchs pushed across two unearned runs in the top of the 5th but it wasn’t enough to prevent the run rule yet again, 15-7. Every player in the Bandits lineup contributed, with Hart hitting another HR and Hunter Anglin going deep twice. All the Bandits stroked the ball for the week and hit 13 HRs as they went 6-0 and outscored their opponents 65-14. The Bandits now have the title as the Georgia state champs but that is only a warm-up for what they want to do in Disney. For the Monarchs and the Astros, there is still time to regroup and figure out what formula will provide them the winning answers in late July.
