Tournament Results: 13U Sunshine State Super NIT (5/16 - 5/18/08) Pool Play A total of 17 teams faced off in pool play for the 13-U tournament and when all the dust had settled, only three were still without a loss. The Central Florida Junior Patriots, St. Pete Hurricanes and #12 Coral Springs Diamonds all went 2-0 in pool play action. TBS’s #9 ranked Atlanta Monarchs went 1-1. Southwest Florida yardDawgs out of Ft. Myers brought in some pretty strong credentials but also posted a 1-1 mark in preliminary round action. Bracket Play Easily the biggest bracket of the Sunshine State Super NIT (17 teams in all) took quite a while to complete but when all the dust had settled, the Florida Extreme emerged the tournament champion with a 2-0 win over the St. Pete Hurricanes. St. Pete was one of three teams that battled through pool play without a loss. The other two, Central Florida Junior Patriots and Coral Springs Diamonds, bowed out of tournament play before the final round. Coral Springs lost a tough 7-6 encounter with the Hurricanes and the Patriots fell to Travel Ball Select’s Atlanta Monarchs, 9-1 in quarterfinal round action. Another highly regarded squad, the Southwest Florida Yarddawgs, also felt the wrath of the Hurricanes, losing a tough 2-0 battle in the quarterfinals. Pitchers who threw two or more innings for the Extreme in pool play included Colby Bortles, Collin Maxfield, Eugene Vazquez and Vinne Rosache.
