13U TOURNAMENT RESULTS (6/8/08): PA SUPER NIT Hanover Heat takes the Championship the hard way and Brooklawn Baseball makes a name for themselves. The NC Cleveland Indians and RBI Redwings, both ranked teams, were eliminated in the semi-finals by these two teams. Brooklawn Baseball made its first appearance against national competition at the Battle in the South, where they didn’t make much of a showing. They certainly played better this past weekend, defeating Hanover Heat 11 – 3 on Saturday (in pool play) and grabbed the #1 seed for single elimination on Sunday. The Heat had a much tougher schedule on Saturday, going 0 – 2 after losing to the RBI Red Wings 11 – 10 and Brooklawn, making the Heat have to battle out of the #10 seed and play 4 games on Sunday to win it all. On Sunday, the Heat defeated the #7 seed SYA Mets 7 – 0, the #2 seed South Jersey Sidewinders 17 – 1, the #3 RBI Red Wings 3 – 2 in semis, and 14 – 9 over #1 Brooklawn to win it all. The semi-finals and finals proved to be redemption for the Heat. Brooklawn’s path included the 11 – 3 win (5 inning mercy rule) over the Heat on Saturday, 12 – 0 over #8 PA Black Sox in quarterfinals, a 3 – 1 victory over NC Cleveland Indians in semis (who got a 7-0 forfeit in their quarter final game), and then the loss to the Heat in finals. The championship game started with the Heat’s #4 hitter (tall lefty pitcher, Bryce Harman) hit a bullet line drive in the top of the 1st inning that hit the pitcher’s throwing arm to knock him out of the game (also the #4 hitter) and in the bottom of the 1st inning, Brooklawn’s leadoff hitter (and center fielder) broke his ankle / leg sliding into home. Surprisingly, Brooklawn held a 7 – 4 lead going into the 6th inning, but when the replacement pitcher (from the 1st inning) ran out of gas, the Heat piled on 7 runs and eventually won 14 – 9. It was a very hot & humid weekend and the Hanover Heat had to play 4 games to win the championship and a trip to Disney in August. The Heat was the appropriate title for a team to win this past weekend. Brooklawn will continue to seek out the top competition to better their skills as they hope to do battle against the Beaver Valley Red.
