2008 13U Kentucky Kids Print E-mail
13U Kentucky Kids

The Kentucky Kids organization was started by Bill Holocher when his son Tyler was 10.  The 'older' Kentucky Kids are now juniors in high school.   That group played  in various national tournaments.   They won one National W.S. in 2002 at the Hap Dumont  in Arkansas.  The Kids traveled from Florida to Michigan and completed quite well against some very high caliber teams.  The focus of the Ky Kids is development first.  The aim is simply to teach good baseball, and prepare the kids for their next level of ball.

Obviously the Kids play to win ballgames, but the focus is entirely on exposure to top notch competition and improvement.  Of the 12 kids on that original team, 9 started varsity as Sophomores in H.S including: Tyler Holocher, Zach Isler, Luke Maile, Ryan Darner, Brandon Nutini, Johnny Pabst, Ryan Sainola, Tyler Brake, and E.J. Murray; the other three played significant innings as Sophs including Patrick VanSant, Mitch Shover, and Elliot Hartmann.  All except two are starting varsity this year as Juniors. Coach Rich Maile continued the Coach Holocher's Kentucky Kids program with his younger son's age groups, currently 13U and 8U.

The next generation of Kentucky Kids are very similar to the first group in that they are all from pretty much the same community in Northern Kentucky. The Ky Kids do not really "recruit" kids, as their focus is primarily on boys who will be going to high school together.  To date, the families come to us and ask to try out.  (We do some homework on all parents btw to make sure the value systems mesh). The Kids battle year in and year out for first place in the very competetive Southwest Ohio League, which includes teams from Greater Cincinnati, Kentucky and Indiana.  In addition, the Kids schedule individual games with the best teams they can find including those from older age groups.   The 13U Kids played in the Barrett Fletcher World Series in Tampa, Fl. as 11u; the NABF World Series in Memphis, and U.S. All Star World Series in Lexington, KY as 12u.  The won 6 games in two days to capture the U.S. All Star Championship.  The Kids also traveled to Cooperstown at 12U where they faced one of the tougher pool schedules to finish in the top 20 out of 85 teams.    The 2008 Schedule includes some very good Regional Tournaments in between trips to Knoxville for the Battle in the South; Memphis for the CABA Open World Series; Michigan for the Michigan Elite Invitational Tourney; Indianapolis, IN for the Indiana Bulls Invitational and across the Ohio River for the Cincinnati Flames Invitational.   All of these tournaments attract high caliber national competition.  .

All the 13 Ky Kids will take the mound and all these Kids can hit the baseball.  The Kids have some good speed and strong arms.  The biggest challenge for the Kentucky Kids playing the schedule they play is the fact that all of these kids play multiple sports.   Coach Maile is a big believer in playing whatever's in season at this age.  He discourages fall ball and doesn't begin regular work outs till very late in the winter / early spring as basketball season ends.  For that reason, along with the cold-wet weather in Kentucky in spring, the Kentucky Kids historically play a LOT better ball in June and July than they do early in April and May.  By the end of July, they shut it down and let the kids relax, get ready for football and the new school year. All of the Kids' money is raised by the kids and their parents through fund raisers and donations from various businesses in the community.  They don't have their own field, but work to get time wherever they can get it.   The Kids will play between 50 and 58 games this year, and 4 will be at "home").

The 2008 Kentucky Kids 13u team consists of:   Dylan Craig P, OF, IF Jared Dwyer P, OF, IF Jake Lankheit C, P, IF, OF Ben Maile P, IF Corey Garrett P, OF, IF, C Clayton McKinney P, IF, OF D.J.
