12U Cooperstown NATC Champions - TEAM TBS PDF Print E-mail

August 28, 2008 Cooperstown, New YorkDreams Park

Two teams faced off tonight that had proven to be powerhouse clubs during the course of this tournament, TEAM TBS and Boys of Baseball National Travel Team.  Both had scored an average of 20 runs per game and both had held opponents to fewer than 2 runs per game.  But, in this game, TEAM TBS came out on top by a score of 11-1 to take the 2008 NATC crown.

TEAM TBS jumped on top early, in the top of the 1st inning, on a 3xRBI Home Run by Jerrod Hathcock.  In their 2nd at bat, Grayson Ivey and Brett Henderson got on base before SS Matt Jervis also connected on a 3xRBI Home Run extending the lead to 6-0.  TEAM TBS added runs in the 3rd inning and went into the 5th leading 8-0 when Brett Henderson hit a 2xRBI single and later scored putting the lead to 11-0.

The Boys of Baseball Nationals, got on the score board with a solo HR by Jason Martin.  From that point, the outstanding pitching and stingy defense of TBS kept the potent National's offensive line-up off balance and off the bases.

The winning pitcher was David Boyle who pitched 4 and 1/3 innings for TEAM TBS allowing only 1 run, striking out 5, while giving up only 4 hits.  Grayson Ivey got the save as he shut down the powerful Boys of Baseball Nationals during the 5th and 6th innings - sealing the TBS win.

Coach Shannon Ivey said after the game “We had 11 great players.  We had a rope made that was put together from 12 pieces.  We kept this rope hanging in our dugout, to remind us if we stick together we can't be broken.  And these kids came together and played as one, and that is why we won”.  Coach further commented, “David Boyle did an awesome job pitching, and we had 10 other great players backing him up”

This win marked the second straight year that a Shannon Ivey coached team won the NATC Championship.
