12U Cooperstown NATC - Day 4 Pool Play Wrap-up PDF Print E-mail

August 27, 2008: Cooperstown, New York Dreams Park

NATC week has now completed all pool play games (7 by each team).  “Bracket Play” seeding has been set, and the championship rounds have now kicked off as of 2pm today.  The top 10 seeded teams have earned 3 rounds of byes, and will not play until 8:30pm tonight.  The table below summarizes pool play results for the top 20 teams.

While seeding was determined by (1) wins, and (2) fewest runs allowed, this table shows additional stats – including average runs scored, and the average number of losses of the opponents that each seeded team faced.

      Average Runs Opponent's
Rk #Wins TEAM Scored Allowed Avg Losses
1 7 Long Beach Nomads 15 0.57 5
2 7 Boys of Baseball National Travel Team 19 1.14 4
3 7 Broward Red Dogs 12 1.14 5
4 7 Team TBS 21 1.43 5
5 7 Encinitas Reds 17 1.86 4
6 7 ASD Bulldogs 14 1.86 5
7 7 Long Beach Dirtbags 15 2.14 2
8 7 Team Akadema Bulldogs 16 2.33 3
9 7 Placentia Mustangs 8 2.43 4
10 7 Southern California Storm 14 2.57 4
11 7 Team One 12 5.29 5
12 6 Irvine Blue Wave 13 1.43 4
13 6 BB Academy Knuckleheads 12 2.00 4
14 6 Minnesota Baseball Academy Blizzard 13 2.29 4
15 6 Southern California Bruins 9 2.29 3
16 6 Team Anderson 10 3.29 3
17 6 La Verne Eagles 9 3.57 5
18 6 North County Longhorns 13 3.57 5
19 6 Eastern Massachusetts All Stars 10 3.71 3
20 6 Tri-County Cobras 10 3.86 5

The statistics indicate that “Boys of Baseball Nationals” and “TEAM TBS” clearly are packing potent offenses with good defenses.  TEAM TBS has a potent line-up of hitters as 10 players have hit a total of 44 home runs in pool play.  In fact, had this TEAM not batted left handed, in some of their wins, they may have challenged the tournament record of 73 home runs by the Miami Force back in July, 2008.

If one considers “Opponent’s Average Losses” as shown in the above table, one may conclude that the top 6 seeds faced weaker opponents – since their opponents lost 4 or 5 of the seven games they played.  However, this won’t show the true story.  A few of these top seeded teams also had wins over other seeded teams.  For example, while TEAM TBS opponents won 2 and lost 5 of their seven games, TBS had wins over a very good TEAM Anderson – who is a team that can challenge for the championship.  In addition, TEAM TBS also had a quality 18-4 win over Tri-State Arsenal, the #32 seed.  Tri-State is a team that has a few very good pitchers.  These ACE pitchers can change the outcome of a game.

The Long Beach Dirt Bags opponents had average records of 5 wins and 2 losses.  Two of the Dirtbag wins came against teams that are seeded.  Namely, the North County Longhorns and the Eastern Mass All Stars.  These two quality wins suggest that the Dirtbags will be a tough competitor in championship bracket play.

If we look at what a few of the coaches are saying about teams that can be sleepers, one theme that is repeated is that the Tri-State Arsenal, US Baseball Stars, and Eastern Mass All Stars each have pitchers that can make them a formidable foes – when they put these pitchers on the mound.

Stay tuned for updates as NATC week now moves into Bracket play.
