12U NYBC Semi-Finals - Juice outlast Norwalk in 9 innings Print E-mail

By Alden Gonzalez

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – All throughout the National Youth Baseball Championships at Gameday Baseball’s First Tennessee Fields, Chet Lemon’s team have developed a knack for never giving up.

In the semifinals for his 12-and-under team on Sunday afternoon, that was truer than ever.

The Juice 12s came from behind in their final at-bats and came away with a thrilling, 5-4, nine-inning win against the Norwalk Stingrays. With the victory, the Juice 12s (3-1) will play in the championship game later on this afternoon against Southeastern Lexington.

Down by one run heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Juice 12s had the first four batters reach base before shortstop Hunter Lee laced a shot over the head of the Stingrays’ right fielder for the win.

In that inning, the Juice 12s got a leadoff double, a walk and a single to right field by third baseman Tyrone Perry to tie the game. Then, after Carl Chester was intentionally walked, Lee came up big to seal the deal.

The Juice 12s, representing the Amateur Athletic Union, were down, 3-1, in the bottom of the sixth but got an RBI single by Jordan Parnell – also the winning pitcher by giving up just one run in 3 1/3 innings – and an RBI groundout by starting pitcher Noah Dyals to tie the game.

But in the ninth, the Stingrays (3-1), representing the USSSA, used a little trickery to retake the lead. With two outs and runners on second and third, their runner on second intentionally put himself in between the two bases, forcing the Juice catcher to throw to second and allow the go-ahead run to score.

But, once again, the Juice 12s proved they never quit.

“[The Stingrays] have been, by far, the best competition that we’ve had to face,” Lemon said. “We pride ourselves in trying to be one of the better clubs, and the fights that we’ve had in this event have been some battles.

“I think the character of our ball-club is to never give up or quit because they’re not used to walking off the field losing. They just won’t accept it.”
