By Alden Gonzalez MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In one of the most exciting games in the National Youth Baseball Championships so far, the East Cobb Astros came from behind and just held on in the final inning in a nail-biting, 3-2 win over the Gresham Park Yard Dogs on Saturday afternoon. In what had been a pitchers’ duel for most of the game, the Astros found themselves down 2-1 in the sixth inning. But with two outs, Cornell Nixon knocked in the tying run with an infield single, and Jacob Heyward singled in the go-ahead run. Then, in the Yard Dogs’ final at-bat, Nixon fielded a ground ball at shortstop and got the tying run out at the plate. Next, with another runner on third, Ryan Worley – who pitched the final two innings without allowing a run and put his team on the board with a sacrifice fly in the fourth – struck out the final batter to end the thriller. With the win, the Astros (2-1), from Marietta, Ga., moved on to play in the semifinals of the 12-and-under division on Sunday, and the Yard Dogs (1-2), from Atlanta, were eliminated. "Absolutely fantastic," Astros head coach Jeff Stern said about the win. "It was timely hitting. We preach back-to-back hits to these kids all the time and, at this age, you can only hope that they start to understand it a little bit." Going into that sixth inning, Yard Dogs starter Tyrell Brown had given up just one run in five innings while striking out eight. Gresham Park’s two runs came on a couple of throwing errors that scored Cordale Duncan in the first inning, and a two-out infield single by Isaiah Dean that gave the Yard Dogs a 2-1 lead.
