Norwalk Stingrays 13 Banditos Black 12

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – In a game that featured an offensive explosion from both teams, the 12U Stingrays of Norwalk, California beat the Banditos Black of Houston, Texas to win the USSSA Elite 24 World Series championship here on Sunday.  The Stingrays went 7-1 in the tournament while averaging nearly 9 runs per game and giving up only 4 runs. The Stingrays emerged out of pool play seeded only 7th, but once “bracket play” started; they immediately begin to show their power by disposing of the Charlotte Hurricanes 14-1, then beating TEAM Rawlings 12-2,  and the HB Nitro Elite 8-0.  The Stingrays then moved into the semi-finals and edged past the Texas Terminators 5-3 to earn the right to play the Banditos Black in the finals.  This game was an offensive exhibition wherein a total of 25 runs were scored as the Stingrays beat the Banditos 13-12.

The Banditos took an early 2-0 lead with a lead-off walk by James Alcoser, followed by doubles from Chris Cavazos and Cameron Miller.  The Stingrays answered in the bottom of the 1st with 3 straight singles by Edgar Morales, Tyler Alamo, and Ray Henderson to tie game after one full inning.

In the 2nd inning, the Banditos answered with 2 more runs that were generated by a lead off single by Ishmael Edwards, a walk by James Alcoser, along with a 2xRBI double by Cameron Miller – giving the Banditos a 4-2 lead as the Stingrays came to their 2nd at bat.  The Stingrays cut the Banditos lead to 4-3 after 2 innings.

The Banditos offense kept pounding the Stingrays in the 3rd, when Ishmael Edwards once again delivered a lead-off single to get things started.  This hit was followed by a 2xRBI Home Run by Blake Richards that puts the Banditos up 6-3.  The Stingrays offense was able to answer with only one run (from a SAC Fly) to cut the Bandito lead to 6-4 after 3 innings.

The Bandito offense came to bat in the top of the 4th inning and continued to pound in runs.  This scoring spree was delivered by a lead-off single by Chris Cavazos that was followed by a 2xRBI Home Run by Cameron Miller and a solo Home Run by Colton Weisbrod – giving the Banditos a commanding 9-4 lead as the Stingrays took their bats in the bottom of the 4th inning.

But the Stingrays refused to give up, as their bats came alive with 4 straight hits that added 3 runs to close the Bandito lead to 9-7 going into the 5th inning.   At this point, Tyler Adkinson came to the mound as the Stingrays defense buckled down and shut down the potent Bandito offense in their 5th at bat.  This stand allowed the Stingray offense to take command of the game as Jaime Estrada reaches base and is driven home with a 2xRBI Home Run by Rene Deleon.  This was followed by 2 additional runs that came as a result of an infield error by the Banditos.  After 5 complete innings, the Stingrays had taken an 11-9 lead.

The momentum of exciting games can change suddenly.  The Banditos bounced back with a roar in the top of the 6th, riding the offensive power of Cameron Miller, who lead with a solo Home Run.  This was followed by a walk by Gabriel Klobosits along with a 2xRBI Home Run by Colton Weisbrod (his 6th for tourney).  The put the Banditos back on top 12-11 as the Stingrays came to bat in the bottom of the inning.

In the bottom of the 6th and final inning, the Stingrays got a lead off single by lead off single by Francisco Rios.  This was followed by a fly to the outfield that was hit by Jamie Estrada.  Rene Deleon walked to load then bases with 1-out as the Stingrays trailed 12-11.  Next, Leobardo Duran hit an RBI single to tie the game at 12 all – setting up Edgar Morales, who then hit the game winning line drive single over the 2nd baseman’s head to give the Norwalk Stingrays the 2008 USSSA 12U Elite 24 World Series Championship.

Without question, this was one of the most explosive and more exciting games in the history of 12U Elite 24 tournament play -  game that wasn't decided until the last of the full 6 innings of play.

Edgar Morales, of the Norwalk Stingrays, was named the MVP of the tournament, while Raymond Henderson, also of the Stingrays, was the Offensive MVP.  Cameron Miller, of the Banditos Black, was named the Defensive MVP of this tournament.
