Triple Crown Nationals

Myrtle Beach, SC

TCS national championship featured two regulars in TBS rankings.  #24 Knoxville Stars and #HM NorCal Grizzlies were the definite favorites coming in.  This national tournament featured some of the better teams from around the region.  While most teams were from NC, SC and VA … several other states including CA, TN and MD were represented. Following pool play the Knoxville Stars and the VA Young Guns secured byes. As for the single elimination bracket it was the tale of two halves.  In the top half, it was all Bull City Braves.  The Braves out of North Carolina put on an impressive run.  In the first round they bested Chain Baseball (SC) 10-7 to advance against the #1 seeded Stars.

The quarterfinal match up was not what the Stars had thought it was going to be and the Braves won 7-5 and continued their charge.  While the Braves were cruising the NorCal Grizzlies were making a statement.  Their first round game against Greenville Marlins (TN) ended 10-2 and their quarterfinal ended earlier slugging out a victory against the Charlotte Scorpions (NC) 15-0.  While putting on a pretty good game, errors and untimely walks led to NorCals demise and the Bull City Braves would advance to the Ship with a 5-4 win.

While the Braves were putting together their run to the championship the VA Young Guns were putting on quite a display themselves.  The NC Predators had first shot at the #2 seeded Young Guns.  After beating out another of Virginia’s top teams, VA Bruins, 7-2, the Predators looked to take out a team that they beat twice earlier in the season.  Their quarterfinal matchup with the Young Guns proved to be a classic matchup of aces.  In the end, the Young Guns had a little more fortune and escaped with a 3-1 win.  Also, in this half of the bracket the Richmond Rockies (NC) put together a string of victories.

In the first round the Rockies took out Carolina Classics (SC) to advance against the #3 seeded, GBC Acceleration (NC).  GBC fresh off a early slaughter of Tri-County Timberwolves (NC), 11-0, seemed destined to advance to the semi-finals.  The Rockies pulled out the upset over GBC, 6-4, and the #6 seeded Rockies advanced to face the VA Young Guns.  The Young Guns did not waste any time and jumped out quickly and ended the affair early, winning 15-1.

In the championship, the Young Guns got off first.  In a pitching duel, Alec Bettinger of the VA Young Guns bested the rotation of pitchers from the Bull City Braves.  While the score, 4-0, seemed close, the actual story was the dominating performance put on from the mound.  Bettinger ended the contest with 11 Ks.  Bull City, gracious in defeat, clamored to the coaches to award him the MVP of the championship game.

A very impressive run for the VA Young Guns and Bull City Braves.  Congratulations to both.  Also of note:  the Young Guns yielded only 5 runs the whole tournament.  Quite a dominant performance from the champions.

In the third place game, the Grizzlies found their spark.  They ended the contest early with a 13-0 win over the Richmond Rockies.  Though not what the Grizzlies had wanted it was still a great tournament for the California kids.
