12U Elite 24 Update: Paulding County Vipers - Jackson Coyotes Print E-mail

August 6, 2008 Disney Wide World of Sports arena, Kissimmee, Florida USSSA Elite 24 World Series

[GA] Paulding County Vipers 9 – [TN] Jackson Coyotes
Play for 12U teams have now moved into the first day of double elimination bracket play.  There were some very good games played today, but none better than the PC Vipers extra inning face off against the Coyotes from Jackson, Tennessee.

The Vipers scored a run in the first two innings with doubles from Eric Knox and Jeremiah Johnson taking a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the 2nd inning. T
he Coyotes answered by scoring 4 runs from string of singles from Seth Young, Mathew Poteete, Thomas Watson, Logan Huges, and Carter McMackin – taking a 4-2 lead into the 3rd inning.

But the Vipers quickly replied with 3 runs to regain the lead 5-4.  This lead lasted into the 6th inning as neither team was able to score runs during the 4th and 5th innings.  The Vipers added two safety cushion runs in the top of the 6th.  These runs were generated through the hitting and base running of Jeremiah Johnson and Cody Cobb.

But, the game really got interest when the Coyotes came to bat in the bottom of the final inning facing a 3 run 7-4 deficit.  They fought back with determination by capitalizing on every opportunity – starting when Ethan Mayberry drew a walk, getting on first base with 1 out.  This was followed with a single by Alex Whitwell to put runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 out.  At that point, Seth Young stepped to the plate and hit a 2xRBI single.  Runners advanced on passed balls. Then, the Coyotes tied the game, on another passed ball that sailed behind home plate.  The Viper defense bent, but didn't break and they were able to hold the Coyote to a tie that sent the game into extra innings.

The Vipers showed great poise in the extra innings, scoring 2 runs on a triple by Kyler Neal, followed by a solo home run by Eric Knox.

In the bottom of the7th, the Coyotes faced Viper Pitcher, Mitchell Webb, who had come in late in the previous inning.  At that point, Webb systematically retired the first three Coyote batters with two strikeouts that saved the win for the Vipers.   The Winning pitcher for the Vipers, was Daniel Fowler, who had delivered five excellent innings on the mound.

The Vipers will now move on to face the Charlotte Megastars on Thursday at 12:30pm.
