12U Update - AAU National Championship Print E-mail

By George Templeton

The 12-under AAU National Championship at several sites around Richmond, Va. began pool play with 24 teams from several states. The top 16 teams advanced to the Division I championship bracket, but six pool winners stood out in particular.

Teams were seeded by records and number of runs allowed and Chet Lemon’s Juice from Florida were the most impressive. The team named for the former all-star Tiger outfielder went 3-0 in Pool E, outscored its opponents 31-1 and earned the top seed.

The other eye-popping numbers came from the Central Virginia Mustangs, the winners in Pool F. The Mustangs scored the most runs and had the second best run differential, outscoring its opponents 37-12. Because of the runs allowed rule, they were seeded sixth, lowest of the pool winners.

Pool A winners Blue Springs Classic took the No. 2 seed by allowing only two runs in its three wins. 5-Tool Nationals outgunned its opposition 28-7 to win Pool B and take the fourth seed. The Virginia Shredders are the fifth seeds after sweeping Pool C by a 27-7 score. FLA-CAT is seeded third after winning its Pool D games by 21-5.

The first round of the Division I championship bracket began today at the Glen Allen Softball Complex with these games:

No. 1 Chet Lemon’s Juice (Fla.) (3-0) vs. No. 16 Southern Maryland Storm (1-2)
No. 8 RBI Baseball (Va.) (2-1) vs. No. 9 Florida Phoenix (2-1)
