2008 12U Germantown Giants (TN) Print E-mail

The Germantown Giants organization has a tradition of sending teams each year to the historic Cooperstown Dreams Park. This year was no different as the 12U Germantown Giants competitive baseball team traveled to Cooperstown Dreams Park week #3. The Giants entered the Cooperstown tournament 59-9-1 winning 9 of 12 tournaments.

The Giants started strong going undefeated in pool play at 7-0 beating tough opponents in the Lantana Lightening and the East Cobb Astros. They were the 6th seed heading into elimination play and won in a variety of different ways combining defense, speed and power as they eliminated the Motor City Hit Dogs, Virginia Crush, Florida Freeze and the #2 seed and TBS "Honorable Mention" Viper Baseball Academy in resounding fashion 9-2 to make it to the Championship game. In the championship game against the TBS "Honorable Mention" South Florida Tsunami the Giants held onto a 3-2 lead until eventually losing 5-3. The team stuck to the basics that had won them so many games before, "the chain". Head Coach Mike Fitzsimmons introduced a chain with a hook on the end that you could see hanging in their dugout at every game. It was this teams theme, "there are NO weak links in the chain". Each link represented a player on the team, meaning no one player was more important than another, as each player had a special purpose. A Giant may be called on to do something small to win a ball game such as a non-glamorous duty like bunt, DH, pinch run, or cheer for their team. The players all accepted their roles and understood that no matter what their role they are an important link in the chain.

After finishing runner up in Cooperstown, the Giants went on to become the Super Series National Champions in a loaded field that included the TBS #3 Terminators, TBS "Honorable Mention" Jackson Coyotes, Memphis Tigers, Texas Elite, Tulsa Hurricanes and the TBS "Honorable Mention" Southern California Spartans. In the championship game the Giants run ruled the SC Spartans 13-1 to become the Super Series National Champions. The win earned the Giants a berth in the Inaugural National Youth Baseball Championship on August 21-24 at 1st Tennessee Fields in Memphis TN. This event was started by Eddie Einhorn, owner of the Chicago White Sox. This tournament will include the winners of the USSSA Elite 24, the NABF, AAU Baseball, Babe Ruth Baseball, Dixie Youth Baseball, Super Series, the AABC and Pony Baseball with the winner being declared a true National Champion. So the Giants dream season that began where dreams begin in Cooperstown, will continue on.

Their "Links in the Chain" are: Hunter Bledsoe, LeeMarcus Boyd, Michael Fitzsimmons, DeShawn Lindsay, Ben Lowe, Montell Johnson, Jon Jon Phipps, Tanner Robertson, Timothy Rowe, Shane Tucker, and Cody Turner, Vance Tatum and West Covington and are led by assistant coaches Mike Farrell, Jeff Owen and Neal Roberson.

This team is loaded with athletes that all have a love, respect and passion for the game of baseball, coaches, umpires and their parents. At 71-10 the Germantown Giants have proven they can compete with the top teams in the nation. This is a very talented group of young men who epitomize what a "TEAM" is all about and care very little about individual goals. Travel Ball Select congratulates the Super Series Champion Giants for a great season and wish the best of luck in the Inaugural National Youth Baseball Championship tournament.
