2008 12U Nevada Wildcats - Cooperstown Week #1 Champions Print E-mail

The 12U Nevada Wildcats baseball team entered the Cooperstown Dreams Park national tournament on June 7th, 2008 as one of 98 teams vying for the championship. They left with a perfect record and a tournament championship.

The TBS #8 ranked Nevada Wildcats marched through the competition defeating teams from seven different states on their way to a 7-0 pool play record and a #2 overall seed. They outscored their opponents in pool play 111-13. The first playoff game saw the Wildcats match up versus #31 seed Easton Dirt Devils from Arizona. The Wildcats defeated the Dirt Devils 15-1 to advance to the sweet 16. The next morning the Wildcats met the #15 seed North Glendale Wolfpack, also from Arizona, and managed to win 12-5. Yet another team from Arizona awaited the Wildcats in the elite 8, the #7 seed Arizona Gauchos. The Wildcats hung on to win 8-4. The win placed the Wildcats in the Final Four and one win away from the championship game. In their third consecutive game of the day the Wildcats matched up with the #10 overall seeded Team Slugger, from Florida. Team Slugger was mentioned as one of the pre tournament favorites. The Wildcats fought gamely in the 10-6 victory earning a shot for the tournament title. In the championship game the Wildcats faced the #1 tournament seed and TBS ranked #7 Team Miami. Team Miami was 116-0 entering the game and was considered the heavy favorite. The Wildcats took the lead in the first inning with a solo homerun by pitcher, Michael Blasko. They held Team Miami scoreless in there half of the first. In the second inning, the Wildcats again got a solo homerun from catcher Joshua McCollum to go up 2-0. Team Miami scored a run in the third inning to cut the Wildcats lead to 2-1. The Wildcats turned inning ending double plays in the fourth and fifth innings to hold on to the lead. Team Miami loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but Michael Blasko struck out the side to end the game preserving a 2-1 victory. Michael ended with 12 strikeouts while allowing only two hits.

The Wildcats enjoyed an exciting week of baseball at Cooperstown Dreams Park. The weeklong event required a total team effort from the players and coaches. The Wildcats were a class act the entire tournament. The team consists of Michael Blasko, Joshua McCollum, Michael Pollex, James Anderson, Collin Dobrolecki, Keola Paragas, Joey Kulla, Tyler Van Stone, Jesse Keiser, Griffin Kelly and Keaton Smith. Travel Ball Select congratulates the Wildcats for winning it all in Cooperstown week #1.
