11U Update - Elite 24 Pool Play - Day 2 Print E-mail
August 4, 2008 Disney Wide World of Sports arena, Kissimmee, Florida.

Day 2 of 11U Pool Play is now completed as the USSSA Elite 24 World Series moves into double elimination Bracket match-ups.  Following are highlights of some of today’s top games.

So Cal Mavericks 2 -
Pensacola Aquasox 1
In the early bird games,
the So Cal Mavericks got off to a great start this morning.  It looks like the early 4am arrival of many of their players yesterday has worn off.  Trevor Harrison of the Pensacola Aquasox threw a great game, just giving up two runs.  Lorenzo Carrillo pitched a outstanding 6 inning complete game for the MAVs allowing only 1 run.  He picked up some outstanding defensive play by his catcher Joshua Sanchez who had 2 outstanding blocked third strikes and throw outs to 1st to keep the Aquasox off the bases. Brett Swartz laid down the perfect sacrifice bunt putting the Mavericks in position to score.  This was a truly Great defensive game by both teams.

Simi-Predators (CA) versus Inside KC Sports (KS)
We start with a look at the Simi-Predators, a team that traveled from Simi-Valley, California making a statement that they are ready to play.  Today, they extended their pool play record to 2 and 0 by beating the Inside Sports KC Sports baseball club from Shawnee, KS by a score of 11-0.  The predators jumped out to a narrow 2-0 lead, early in the 3rd inning when Adam Jamal crushed a hart hit up center to bat the opening runs for the Predators.  The Predators one more run in the top of the 4th, then promptly shut down the KC Sports in the bottom of the inning.  But the Predators came to bat in the top of the 5th and put on a beautiful hitting exhibition with every Predator batter crushing the ball.  In the end, the
Simi Predators had 10 hits from 8 different players along with 8 more runs scored to close out the game 11-0. Easton Lucas had 3 RBI's to lead team.  Adam Jamal had multiple base hits. Logan Alexander pitched a complete game 5 hit shutout for the Predators with 8 K's and only 1 walk.  Another outstanding day for the Predators as they move into bracket play unbeaten.

TEAM Rattlers (TX) 12- Gladiators (TX) 4
In the category of ongoing in-state rivalaries, TEAM Rattlers picked up where they left off yesterday and handed their rival Gladiators a 12-4 loss here today.  The lead went back and forth for the first 3 innings when key hits by Vaught, Lynn. Perez, and Andritsos put the Rattlers up 5-2 after two innings.  But, outstanding hitting and base running from Gladiators; Murillo. Comeaux, and Proctor, tied the game in the top of the 3rd.   In the bottom of the 3rd, the Rattlers retaliated when scores on passed balls plus a big hit from Theodore Hoffman drove in the runs that put the Rattlers ahead 7-5.  From that point, TEAM Rattlers would not budge.  With Murillo on the mound, the Rattlers shut down the Gladiator offense.  Then, in the top of the 5th, they added 4 more runs before time was called.

Houston Angles 9 - Florida Fire 4
Perenial powerhouse Houston Angel beat a good Florida - impressively.  Christian Whidden opened with a 2 out double for the Fire, but was left stranded on base.  The Angels jumped up by 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning on RBI’s by Tyler Brandon, Daniel Lopez, and Enrique Sanchez.  When the 3rd inning was over, the Angels lead 7-3 and never relinquished their lead.

The Florida Fire benefitted from doubles by Christian Widden, Brandon Rogers, and other good hits from, Michael Bryne, Bradley Nenna, Braden Rollins, and Hunter Allen.
The Angels had several players who made some big hits including doubles by Shane Lawless, Tyler Ruth, and Evan Bonata.  Also, a number of Angels had key hits including Tyler Ruth, Taylor Broadway, Daniel Lopez, and Enrique Sanchez – just to mention a few.

TABU 5 – Texas American Prospects 5 (Tie)
A full stadium packed into field 25 to watch this match up between the #1 ranked Texas Prospects and the #2 ranked TABU.  Clearly, this game proved to be worth the price.  It was the closest game of the day where the TABU kept the pressure on, but the Prospects wouldn’t break and kept fighting back.  Catcher and Pitcher Bryce Dyrda opened scoring with a booming Solo Home run in the bottom of the 1st.   The Prospects were held scoreless in the top of the 2nd.  The TABU added runs in the bottom of the 2nd when TABU pitcher hit an RBI single.  The TX American Prospects rebounded and scored 4 runs in the top of the 3rd from hits by Rubin Hampton, Jake Almendarez, Adrain Munios, and Kebryan Hayes rallied to tie the game 4 all.  The game remained tied through the 4th.  But the TABU added a run in the 5th when Verdin, the TABU first baseman, hit an RBI single.   This hit was answered by the Prospects in the top of the 6th when TJ Alexander singles – then steals to second and again to 3rd.  With the bases loaded, Jake Alexander is hit by the pitch to drive in the run that tied the game.  In the bottom of the 6th, Kendal Jeffries came to the mound for the Prospects and pitched a final inning shut out that kept the game tied through 6 complete innings of play.  And that was the final score – a 5 to 5 tie – a fitting outcome for a face off between two teams ranked nationally at #1 and #2.

Houston Lightning 4– CHIEF (TX) 8
In another feature game held in the late afternoon, The Houston Lightning jumped to an early 2-0 lead with a 2xRBI double from Drew Van Norman.  The CHIEF answered with one run in the bottom of the 1st when Patrick Wiseman drove in Slade Dale, who had got on base earlier with a single.  The CHIEF rally stalled at that point.  Houston went up 3-1 in the top of the 2nd when Cade Edwards hit a 2xRBI double.

But the CHIEF bounce back in the bottom of the 2nd with a double from Bailey Combs, and RBI singles from Mathew Mullineux and Rocco O’Brian.  The CHIEF extend their lead with RBI’s from Jake Rogers and good base running by Tyler Payne and TJ Neal in the bottom of the 3rd. CHIEF pitcher, Jake Rogers, turned in a great performance on the mound.  This allowed the CHIEF to add 3 more runs in the bottom of the 4th when Domineq Jackson entered the game and immediately hit a lead-off double that was first ruled a solo home run.  However, careful review ruled that the ball had went through the fence – not over it.  However, Jackson showed speed and quickness by quickly stealing to 3rd, and then to home.

The Lightning added a run in the top of the 5th when Anthony Dahl hit an RBI single.  This cut the CHIEF lead to 8-4.  But, the excellent closing pitching from CHIEF stalled the Lightning rally attempts.
