July 25, 2008 Disney World, Florida:
The East Cobb Astros have shown the power of their game during the 11U AAU National Champion series this week. In the process they have set their claim for top national ranking. They have beaten every opponent they have faced - including several nationally ranked teams (one of which was the Florida Fire - ranked #3 nationally).
This morning, they beat an outstanding Virginia Storm team 8-2 (ranked by 11th nationally by TBS). This win has now moved them into the championship to await their opponent – yet to be determined. Clearly, the Astros are in the drivers seat now. Any opponent they face in the championship on Saturday will have to win 3 straight games including back-to-back wins over the Astros. This is a very difficult – and nearly impossible - feat to accomplish.
The Astros opponent will be determined by the outcome of the Hawaii Warriors and the Virginia Storm game to be played at 10am Saturday Morning. This winner will move on to face the Astros and must beat them twice to take home the title.
Given the way the Astros have performed against several nationally ranked teams in this national championship event, one can expect that they will move toward the top of national rankings once they claim this championship. Just ask the Virginiastorm coach. He was heard to have made the bold statement at the end of their game saying that the “Astros are, by far, the best team in the country". That is a pretty impressive endorsement coming from a very highly respected Virginia Storm coach.
