FAIRFIELD, Ohio – After more than 35 pool play games were completed on Saturday, only four first-round championship bracket games remained, but some of the most exciting and most controversial baseball of the day was yet to be played. In those four games that made up half of the opening round of the 16-team tournament – all played at WW – one game saw a top seed fall, one had a TBS honorable mention drop, one featured a mammoth home run, and the final game was still not complete after more than three hours. VICTORY (Ill.) BASEBALL 2, THE FUTURE (Ill.) 0 Logan Velasquez belted an RBI single to the 211-foot center-field fence, and pitched three scoreless innings as Victory knocked off the No. 1 seed. Drew Clavenna tossed the final three shutout innings, capping off Victory’s fourth game of the day while The Future was playing its first after winning all of its pool games prior to Saturday. The Future had beaten Victory, 10-2 in a tournament earlier this season. “We always said we want to have a chance to come back and play them again,” Victory coach Mark Muszynski said. “And we came out and put it on the line and came through.” Two Future players reached base with two outs in the sixth, but a lazy fly ball to center field ended the game. Victory will play the Indiana Saints-Long Island Titans winner at 11:15 a.m. in a championship bracket quarterfinal at WCBO. MIDLAND (Ohio) TRIBE 15, HILLIARD (Ohio) COLTS 0 (4 innings) Zach Shannon ended the game by launching a three-run homer that cleared the center field fence by about 100 feet to cap off a five-RBI game. “The home run of the tournament, no doubt about it,” Midland coach Todd Riley said. “That thing’s still going.” The game was scoreless until the third, when seventh-seeded Midland struck for seven runs against No. 10 Hilliard, including a two-run single by Shannon. Sam Sprague knocked home Shannon, then Kegan Riley pounded a double to drive home Sprague and extend Midland’s lead. The Shannon came up with two on in the fourth and blasted his homer that made it 15-0 and ended the game. Midland was short on pitching, but James Ross and Brett Ealy tossed two scoreless innings each. Riley took over coaching duties just four weeks ago when the team’s previous coach resigned, making the Tribe’s run even more remarkable. “It was tough for about a week,” Riley said. “Now everything’s great and the kids are playing (well) together.” Midland, which currently has just 11 players, will play the Indiana Cobras in a championship bracket quarterfinal today at 11:15 a.m. at WCBO. INDIANA COBRAS 3, SHOETIQUES (Tenn.) 1 Catcher Jarrett Montgomery homered to right-center field in the third to give the Cobras a 2-1 lead which they would not relinquish. Left fielder Will King doubled and scored later in the inning to make it 3-1, and the Cobras’ pitching held the Shoetiques without a run the final six innings. “We don’t give up a lot of runs – we play good defense,” Cobras coach Clint Kiehl said. “We don’t score a lot, but we’ve won a lot of (close) games this year.” The Shoetiques were the No. 15 seed in the tournament and the Cobras were No. 2, but the Shoetiques are a TBS honorable mention. The Cobras will play the Midland Tribe in a championship bracket quarterfinal today at 11:15 a.m. at WCBO. INDIANA SAINTS 18, LONG ISLAND TITANS 12 (7 innings, called) The Saints’ Marquise Moore doubled twice, drove in three and scored four runs in a game that will be completed this morning. Saints leadoff hitter Trevor Kinnaird added two hits, a walk, was hit by a pitch and scored twice. The Titans had leads of 4-1, 7-4 – and their widest margin of five – 11-6 after four innings. Indiana rallied to make it 11-9 after 4½ innings, then the Titans added a run in the bottom of the fifth to increase their lead to three. The game had surpassed the two-hour mark, and the Titans argued that they were informed the tournament rule dictated that the game was being played with a two-hour time limit. After a discussion with the umpires and tournament officials that included a Long Island coach screaming obscenities at a tournament director in front of his players, it was decided the game would be completed. The Titans briefly took their team off the field in protest, then decided to play the sixth inning and defend their 12-9 lead. Both teams’ coaches were warned for yelling at each other over a controversial called ball. Indiana scored three runs then held Long Island scoreless, forcing extra innings. Short on pitching, the Titans allowed six runs in the top of the seventh inning. When the Titans came to bat in the bottom of the seventh, two batters reached and one got out, and then the park lights went out. It was decided the three-hour, fifteen-minute game would be resumed today with the Saints leading, 18-12. The winner of this game will play Victory Baseball in a championship bracket quarterfinal today at 11:15 a.m. at WCBO.
