2008 11U VBA Print E-mail
                                      11U Viper Baseball Academy

Travel Ball Select’s featured team today is the 11u VBA Rawlings who are an emerging team from a traditionally rich baseball program.  The Vipers have been a mainstay at the top events (Elite 24, Cooperstown NATC to name a few) in the past.  Will this team fill the shoes of those who have blazed the trail before them?  The young Vipers believe so.

The Viper Baseball Academy is located in Huntsville, AL and is led by the Director of Baseball Operations, Ricky Diehl. The purpose of the Viper Program is to provide every player with an experience that will enable them to learn the skills and fundamentals necessary to improve immediately and also lay a foundation that will allow for future baseball opportunities.

This year’s 11u Viper team is coached by Chris Telaga. Coach Telaga is in his second year with the Viper organization and is looking to improve on last years experience and success. In efforts to become even more competitive than last year, this team will only return 3 players from last year. Top pitcher Mason Gilliland returns with his 1.59 earned run average from a year ago as well as top hitter Landon Oliver. Last year’s backstop Mason McClellan will be counted on to anchor a much improved middle of the line up. After playing the regular season with the 11U Dirtbags, Robert Adams joined the Vipers last summer in Cooperstown. He will be a full time Viper this year and will provide both speed and athleticism on the bases as well as up the middle on defense. Mitchell Davidson who played with the Birmingham Blacksox last year is another new player that will provide a lot of experience and toughness on the mound and up the middle on defense. Brett Blailock and Blake Coward come to the Vipers from a very successful Huntsville Heat team. Blailock will not only catch, but provide some offensive pop for the revamped offense. Coward is athletic enough to play anywhere on the field and he will definitely provide some needed pitching depth. Mitchell Adams and Peyton Stracener are new additions that come to the Vipers from last year’s Tennessee Valley Titans. Adams will roam the outfield and provide a left handed change of pace on the mound while Stracener will likely nail down an infield spot as well display his power arm on the mound. Jared Morton brings his utility experience over from the North Alabama Giants and J. P. Pouparina is another utility type player that has recently moved to the area from South Florida. Both will be looked upon to fill several different roles for the Vipers.
The vipers will play a very challenging schedule highlighted by Border Wars  – March 14-16, The Battle in the South – April 25-27, SNIT (Birmingham) May 9-11 and East Cobb Tourney of Champions – May 29-April 1. If all of the new players mesh quickly, this could be one of the better teams in their area.

Travel Ball Select will track and provide updates on the progress of the Vipers and other top ranked teams throughout the year.
