10U NYBU Results - Tomateros Survive Jaguar Rally PDF Print E-mail

- by Ernie Rapiere

August 23, 2008 – Cordova, Tennessee, NYBC Nationals:  The Tomateros de California survived a 6th inning scare by the Southern Jaguars to advanced to the National Championship game face the Juice 10’s of Orlando, Florida.

The Tomateros jumped out to an 8-0 lead going into the top of the 6th and appeared ready to close the game with ease.  Closing pitcher, for the Tomateros, routinely forced ground outs for the first two Jaguar batters he faced.  One more out needed to close the game.  This seemed like an easy task, as they had completely shut down the Jaguar batters for the first five innings.

But walks and errors allowed the Jaguars to load the bases with 2 outs.  Then, James Nelson stepped to the plate and hit a grand slam HOME RUN that gave the Jaguars new life and confidence.  Once this happened, Matt Swain, Nicholas Collins added singles to put runners on base.  Then Josh Terry hit an RBI single to bring the score to 8-5 with two outs, and runners still holding 1st and 2nd base.

At that point, Coach Ruiz called time out and brought in his ACE pitcher, Bryan Duenas.  That proved timely, as Duenas closed out the first batter he faced to save the game.  This preserved the win for starting Pitcher, Isaak Gutierrez, who had left the mound with an 8-0 lead after pitching 4 outstanding, shutout innings striking out 4 batters and giving only 2 hits.

Says Coach Joel Ruiz, “I am very happy that we started out so well”.  Since we had built a big lead we needed to rest our pitchers.  But, we had to bring in our ACES to win this game.  We are fortunate that Bryan Duenas was fresh and closed the game out nicely”.

The big hitters for the Tomateros were Isaak Gutierrez and Henry Martinez who each had multiple hits including RBI doubles.  In addition, Andrew Quezada also contributed a double.
