10U NYBC Update - Tomateros shuts out McComb Print E-mail

August 21, 2008 – Cordova, Tennessee, NYBC Nationals.  The Tomateros De California baseball club from Paramount, California shut out the Dixie Youth champions of McComb, Mississippi by a score of 10-0 in five innings of play.

The Tomateros are ranked #5 in the nation by TravelBallSelect.  They are representing the USSSA baseball organization.  During 2008, they won three major USSSA tournament championships including the April 2008 USSSA World Series Qualifier.  They also were the Elite 24 World Series runner-ups – finishing 2nd  to the Houston Banditos Black.

The Tomateros grabbed the lead from the very first inning and never looked back as they built a 6-0 lead after three and continued pounding more runs with each at bat.  Their offense was driven by solid hitting from top to bottom of their roster.  William Aguilar went 3 for 3 with an RBI double and a solo Home Run. Bryan Duenas and Joshua Rios Favela each had multiple hits and RBI’s.  Jose Luis Ruiz had an RBI single and an RBI double that ended the game in the bottom of the 5th inning.

Henry Martinez was the game’s MVP as he pitched 4 full innings for the Tomateros, while striking out 7 McComb batters, and gave up no runs on two hits.  In addition, Martinez went 2-3 batting as he hit a double, single, and also scored a run.

Isaak Gutierrez of the Tomateros and Cortez Brown of McComb, were named the defensive players of the game for the spectacular plays they each made that robbed opposing batters of “would-be” doubles.

This win puts the Tomateros in sole possession of first place in their pool.  After three games are completed, the top two teams from each pool (A and B) will advance to the championship rounds of play that start on Saturday.
