by Jamie Mercer In their first year as a travel team, the Atlanta, Ga., - based Southern Jaguars pushed their record to 47-19 by outscoring their three opponents, 31-5, to win their division at last week’s NABF World Classic in Southaven, Miss. "We’ve been up-and-down," said head coach Ron Smith. "We’ve been playing in tournaments every weekend since February. Right now we want to be playing our most consistent baseball. "This is our first year as a travel team, and I’m very proud of the way these young men have come together," he continued. "Most of these guys have been playing together since they were five-years-old." Assisting Smith are Mark Echols and Jeff Swain. Originally based out Atlanta’s Grantham Park, the Jaguars and their coaches credit parental support as one of the keys to the success the team is enjoying. "We put a team with talent together, but you have to give credit to the determination of the kids," Smith said. "Also, we couldn’t be a travel team without the parents, who take time off work and spend their own money to support us." The Jaguars feature: Chad Smith, a rightfielder/pitcher who also happens to be the coach’s son. A left-handed pitcher, Smith shows a lot of speed on the bases; Nykolas Collins, a leftfielder/second baseman; Joshua Terry, a NABF All-Tournament pick at shortstop/second base, who joined the team just prior to last week’s Classic; Bradford Jenkins, a centerfielder; Jordan Thomas, a pitcher and NABF All-Tournament selection who "throws the ball really, really well," according to coach Smith; James Nelson, a first baseman/pitcher who is the nephew of former Colorado Rockies’ first-round draft pick Chris Nelson; Daniel Kinchens, an NABF All-Tournament player at third base and on the mound; Andrew Hinton, a catcher/first baseman who has made great strides since the start of the season. Hinton hits in the No. 3 hole; Brandon Singleton, a shortstop/pitcher who also made the All-Tournament team; Matthew Swain, a pitcher/third baseman who is "awesome," according to his coach. "He’s gotten us out of trouble a couple of times," Smith said; and Demarcus Felton, a rightfielder who also serves as the team’s backup catcher.
