TOURNAMENT RESULTS: 10U COOPERSTOWN DREAMS PARK – WEEK 2 OH MY! Youth baseball was at its best for these 97 ten year old teams at Cooperstown Dreams Park during week 2. A lot of great teams with talented players in a surreal environment made for a memorable tournament. The weather delays probably played into the outcome this season. Not only were the winners physically talented but mentally tough. The teams that were the most mentally tough and able to persevere through the many rain delays prevailed. After three and one half day of pool play, the rankings were established. The top teams were undefeated and status was determined by runs allowed. The results after pool play were as follows: 1. Virginia Wolfpack, 2. VYAA Bomberz (CA), 3. Las Vegas Baseball Academy (NV), 4. San Diego Stars (CA), 5. Leon Medical Center (FL), 6. West Pines Nike Cobra (FL), 7. Palm Desert Crush (CA), 8. Team Combat (FL), 9. GBC Team Acceleration (NC), 10. Miami Playmakers, 11. Twin Rivers Thunder (NC), 12. Kennesaw Extreme (GA), 13. Nor Cal Grizzlies (CA). Other team standings included the 14. Lamorinda Monarchs (CA), 18. Texas Nationals, 23. Beaver Valley Red (PA), 27. ECB Astros (GA), 30. ECB Stallions (GA) and 32. Cincy Flames (OH). On Thursday, Championship Day, there were only 16 teams standing. Going into Championship Day it would have been difficult to pick a favorite among the sixteen teams especially amongst the Virginia Wolfpack, LVBA Lightning, San Diego Stars, Leon Medical Center and the Miami Playmakers. All had gone undefeated in pool play. The first four teams had a Runs Allowed average of only 1.17 or less. The Miami Playmakers had given up over two runs per game in pool play, but beat two strong one-loss teams, Texas National and Lamorinda Monarchs in compiling their undefeated record. After the early morning games were completed, eight teams were eliminated and eight teams moved on. The games featuring the Elite 8 teams told the story of the tournament. Two of the games featuring the Elite 8 were extra inning classics - that took everything the teams had to pull off the victory. In the most memorable game of the tournament, LVBA (NV) beat a very strong East Cobb Astros team 1-0 in ten innings. In the bottom of the 10th, Las Vegas advanced runners from 1st and 2nd and no outs with a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt. With the East Cobb infield in, one out and no count, the LVBA hitter attempted but fouled off a sacrifice squeeze. On the second pitch, the hitter swung and fouled the pitch for strike two. Then with the count 0-2, LVBA put on a suicide squeeze and the hitter executed a perfect bunt to the third base side to score the winning run. While Las Vegas Baseball Academy was playing East Cobb Baseball, the top ranked Virginia Wolfpack was locked into an extra inning classic of their own against a very scrappy GBC Team Acceleration squad from North Carolina. The top ranked and mighty Wolfpack team went down 4-2 in nine innings. While LVBA and GBC were shooting all their bullets in the 9 and 10 inning marathons, Leon Medical and the Miami Playmakers sent their aces to the mound and got shutout victories against the powerhouse San Diego Stars and Texas National teams respectively. Over the past 10 years, the San Diego Stars North teams had won the CDP 10U tournament seven times! Their 2008 entry was worthy of the legacy. But the Stars were no match for the big lefty from South Florida that was arguably the MVP of the tournament - Juan Hillman. Hillman made easy work of the Stars, shutting them out on 60 pitches in Leon's 6-0 victory. The final quarterfinal game featured a rematch between the Miami Playmakers and Texas National - the state's top entry at Cooperstown. In a well played game, the Playmakers from Florida shutout the Nationals from Texas 2-0 to advance to the semi finals. In the next round, as expected, the two South Florida teams prevailed over the two teams that had just played extra inning marathons. LVBA in particular put up a good fight through the early innings against the Miami Playmakers. But in the end the Playmakers and Leon Medical Center had more gas left in their tanks and rolled to victory and a spot in the final. In the top of the first inning of the Championship Game, with LMC's starter struggling with control, the Playmakers loaded the bases with one out. LMC turned to Juan Hillman again bringing the pitching star of the San Diego Stars quarter final match into the game to try and put out the early fire. The outstanding Hillman stuck out the next two hitters and went on to pitch four and a third innings of 2-hit shutout ball to lead Leon Medical Center to victory and a championship.
