Tournament Results (6/7/08):  10U Dallas Super NIT   Play heats up on second day of Dallas Super NIT
 By DEVIN HASSON

After a light schedule on Friday, the second day of the Dallas Super NIT featured a little bit of everything.  Saturday saw many of the nationally-ranked teams flex their muscle, a handful of upsets and a bizarre game that saw Oklahoma Elite, the No. 1 team in the 10-and-under division, earn a victory via a forfeit.

The Oklahoma Elite, the No. 1 ranked team, entered the tournament as one of the favorites, but things did not go as smoothly as they would have liked.  The Elite got a good battle from Dallas Tigers-Ward in a 9-6 victory in their opener and it appeared as if it was on its way to another tussle with Texas Sports Black.  After taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, Oklahoma found its advantage trimmed to one after a solo home run by Texas Sports Black.  That is when things got interesting.  After a Texas Sports Black player was hit by a pitch, he attempted to steal second base. He made it safely, but after consultation by the umpires, he was ruled out due to batter interference.  The Texas Sports Black coach came out to challenge the ruling, which eventually brought both umpires into the debate. After a warning, the coach was ejected from the game. The Texas Sports Black coach continued to question the call, prompting the umpires to issue another warning and eventually rule the game a forfeit due to his unwillingness to leave the field.  During this time, some of the fans got into the matter, forcing the local police to be called. No charges have officially been filed, although due to USSSA rules, the coach will be required to miss the team’s first game on Sunday.

As for the on-the-field matters, the Elite struck for two runs in the top of the second, as Kellen Manek walked, stole second and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Corey Zangari, who reached on an error, scored on an infield single by Keone Givens to make it 2-0.  Texas Sports Black struck back for a run in the bottom of the frame, but things quickly got out of control, resulting in the forfeit.

Texas Sports Black will be allowed to participate in Sunday’s pool play, while the Elite were credited with a 7-0 victory.  The Elite were joined by the Dallas Patriots, ranked No. 8, and the Flower Mound Warriors-King as teams that swept their two pool games.  The Patriots outscored their opponents 35-2 to earn the top seed in bracket play. Flower Mound backed up its 16-6 win over No. 19 marshalls-10u with a 7-1 thumping of Bullet Baseball.

The championship game of the 10-and-under division is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sunday.
