TOURNAMENT RESULTS: 10U CALIFORNIA STATE CHAMPS – OC BLACK SOX June 15, 2008 – Riverside, CA: The TBS #4 ranked OC Black Sox’s gift for Father’s Day, a USSSA California State Championship. The boys are back playing 10U again, and returned to Chino Hills to play with some of the best 10U Majors teams in Southern Cal; Smash, Wallbangers, Tomateros and the Sharks. The Sox opened with the Oxnard Sharks. The last time the teams faced each other, the Sharks took it. So there was some redemption on the line. The Black Sox defense was solid and the bats awakened mid-way through the game defeating an always tough Sharks team 8-4. For the second pool play round, the Sox met the Bombers for the first time and jumped out to an early 4 run lead and never looked back, beating the Bombers 9-2. Though undefeated, the Sox received the 2nd seed. They would have played the #7 seed, but they ended up getting a bye that round due to the Tomateros being disqualified from the tournament. This disqualification was the talk of the tournament. Here is a letter to the editor from a concerned coach: “For quite sometime now there have been numerous complaints against the 10U and 11u Tomateros baseball teams. They've been keeping incomplete pitching records and over pitching, by one or two innings, their ace pitchers. This past weekend in the California State Championships they were disqualified for carrying non-roster players whom they did not have birth certificates. They added them in after checking in. They like playing up in class to help develop their skills and players for a higher level, but yet now have a reputation of having to be checked for every little thing. Sure enough they were finally caught in an act serious enough to be disqualified. Previous accusations included switching players w/ the older team for tourneys, but that has yet to be proven. With this latest incident, this may have been the case, but they never gave the new players full names.” After the issue was resolved, the tournament continued with some great baseball. The semi-final game was against the Temecula Irish that defeated the Wallbangers in their first round of seed play. The Irish, known for a solid defense and some great small ball, threatened early, but once again, the Sox responded with a 6 run 2nd inning to take control of the game. The Sox also held off a late game Irish surge, taking the semi-final round 7-3. The Championship Game was a rematch of the opener, Sharks vs.. Sox. The Sharks were coming off a solid performance against the top ranked Smash. But unlike the first game, the Sox never gave an opening for the Sharks to get any traction. Solid pitching backed by solid defense created a “no-hitter” and a shut out, 8-0 victory after the 4th inning. Congratulations to all teams who competed and to the 10U State Champions, OC Black Sox.
