The 14U Virginia Diamonds have high hopes of returning and winning the AAU D1 National Championship later this year in Florida.  This comes after finishing a little short just a year ago in the 2007 National Championship game.  Recently, the Diamonds captured their 2nd AAU Virginia D1 State Championship in as many years and are off and running in the 2008 season.  Here is a brief run through of how it played out.

In pool play, the Diamonds defeated the RBI Nationals and the Stafford Bulldogs on their way to the #1 seed with a bye heading in to single elimination bracket play.  The first game would prove to be challenging as the Diamonds took on a very good Suffolk Warriors team, which finished in the Final Four at the 2007 AAU Nationals.  The Diamonds would go on to win 5 – 2.  In the championship game, the Diamonds proved to be too much as they defeated their in state rivals, the Virginia Wildcats, also by a score of 5 – 2.  The team had about a weeks practice to prepare for the state tournament, due to several players still being involved with their Varsity, JV, and middle school teams.

In 2 weeks, the Virginia Diamonds will face their next test when they head to Wake Forest University to play in an event hosted by the Carolina Angels.  At the end of June, the team will also be challenged when they take part in the 15U Virginia AAU State Tournament.

Over the 4th of July, the Diamonds are hosting an AAU Super Regional, which will include TBS #13 Richmond Braves National '12 & the Bennington Reds.  Travel Ball Select also hopes to see the 2008 VA CABA State Champs, the Green Wave, take part in this event.

The Diamonds had hoped to attend the Battle in the South, but due to obvious economic conditions, the team chose to only attend the AAU Nationals in FL, instead of both events.

Travel Ball Select would like to wish the Virginia Diamonds the best of luck down the stretch and we look forward to more updates in the future.  For more information on the Diamonds, please visit www.virginiadiamonds.org
