2009 USSSA Winter National Super NIT

Eyes on the Prize

There is a lot at stake in the 2009 USSSA Winter National Super NIT in Phoenix, Arizona.  Whenever 250 baseball teams from twenty different cities gather on opening day in the same city there is a coveted prize to be won. This year it is an automatic berth in the USSSA Elite World Series in Orlando, Florida, along with quadruple points added to the team’s standings.

Strange Weather, Great Facilities

Phoenix is known for warm and dry winter temperatures but the coldest and wettest weather of the year brought morning chills below 35 degrees on the first day of pool play. Games were slightly delayed because of the frost on fields and wet fields from earlier rains. However, by 9:45 pool play for the 14U majors had begun at Peoria Sports complex. In spite of two weeks of previous rains the fields are excellent because the 14U’s are playing at the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres exquisite spring training facility. The 11U thru 13U majors pool play began around noon at the fantastic Big League Dreams facility in Gilbert, Arizona about 20 minutes southeast of downtown Phoenix.

Pool Play Day One Results

The biggest surprises and stories from pool play is that the 13U Chandler Reds dropped a game to the Desert Sluggers. The Reds had only lost one other game since their team began. Here is a great quote from the Sluggers website to the team, “Congratulations today Sluggers on your victory over the Reds.  You handed the number 1 team in Arizona only their second loss since their inception. . . .”  Another surprise mainly to the Arizona teams is that so far in pool play most of the California entries have come out with a winning edge.  In the majors division ages 11-14 California teams including San Diego Stars, 13U & 14U. Rawlings Elite 13U, San Jose Lights Out 14U, Lamorinda Monarchs 11u, Simi Valley Terror 11u, SGV Cobra Black, Lamorinda Cougars 12u have posted a 14-1-1 record.  The weather in Phoenix promises to get warmer even as the competition promises to heat up to win these gigantic prizes for travel ball clubs.
